Hundred of wooden heads on Mary Fitzgerald square – Johannesburg, South Africa

Newtown, which is one of the districts in the city center in Johannesburg, has been undergoing a renovation or revitalisation project in recent years. I think the street art and these wooden heads on Mary Fitzgerald Square both have been part of this project. Last week I did a post with street art beneath the M1 freeway next to this square. The beautiful portraits of South African jazz legends are a great way of paying tribute to the musicians. But art around the sqaure does't stop with those portraits.

The Mary Fitzgerald Square is actually a place with more musical fun besides the wooden heads. As we entered the square we walked on these piano keys. A large painting done as a walkway that will lead you up to the Museum Africa. Our plan was to visit the museum, but unfortunately it was closed the day we were here.

A line of wooden heads leads towards the square. I read somewhere that there are more than 500 wooden heads spread out in the center of town. The heads are carved out of old railway sleepers. I didn't look closely at all of them, but what I think is that each one has it's own facial features. No one look alike another. The sqaure is not the only place where you will find the wooden heads. They can be found underneath the freeway as well. In my previous post with street art from Johannesburg, you will see more heads.

Some buildings on the square had these paintings on the fasade. You will also find murals around the square and underneath the freeway as mentioned. The square has actually got it's name after the first female trade unionist in South Africa. When I was in Newton, it was with the hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus. Very convie bus has a stop right here, which was very convenient. This square is certainly worth a stop.
