So I went into my sister's room…
“Eddy, have you heard any news?” I asked trying my best to be calm.
“What news?” she asked looking up from the book she was reading.
“I feel something is going on, I heard Mum and Dad talking in whispers. They sound scared” I explained.
“You don't have to worry madam, if it's something we should know they will tell us. Also, I will advise you not to eavesdrop, and don't question Mum”.
Well, that is my immediate elder sister, she is the least inquisitive in the entire family.
She believes in transparency—the “if you don't tell me, I won't ask you” kind of attitude.
And I'm her opposite, I'm very sensitive and can't rest when I sense anything suspicious.
However, I followed her advice and only observed my parent with my eyes—no questioning.
Two days passed, and still, they didn't mention anything.
Things grew even worse when they started answering calls in secret
Then one evening, I couldn't hold back anymore. So while helping Mom fold her clothes, I mustered up the courage to ask her what was wrong.
“Nothing”, She absentmindedly replied.
But what I heard next shocked me to my core. “Can you stay with your sister if your dad and I aren't with you?” she asked.
I felt numb and confused. I suspected something bad, but I never imagined losing my parents or sister. Without hesitation, I quickly told her that I couldn't handle being alone with just my sister.
Five hours later, my phone rang with an unfamiliar number, and I answered it.
“Hello! Am I speaking with Phyna?”, a voice on the other end said.
“Yes, you are. How can I help you?”, I responded.
“Well, I'm your father, and my name is Elon Musk. You must have heard of me”. The voice said.
“Lol, You are not my father, and you are not Elon Musk,” I said finding the lie too funny and inappropriate.
“Well, I'm not surprised your mother didn't tell you. I knew she wouldn't” he continued.
“I'm sorry to break it to you, but your present father adopted you and your sister, Edidiong. I didn't have the means to take care of you both back then, so your dad gave me some money to give him my two kids, and I did. Your mom couldn't bear to part with you both, so she decided to work for your dad as a cook and your nanny. She wanted to make sure she could always see you guys.” he said.
Hmm!
I was still trying to digest what I heard when I felt a tap on my back...
“Aunty, wake up! It's time for morning prayer.” my sister said and I realized it was all just a dream.
I quickly told her about the dream, and she couldn't help but burst into uncontrollable laughter. "Anyways, you can tell Mom about your dream," she said.
I didn't doubt my dream, so I checked my phone and saw that I had been on a five-minute call with a strange contact. I showed it to my sister, and she dialed the number.
"Hey! My baby, how are you doing? Did your mom finally tell you something?" the voice on the other end said.
"No, she hasn't," my sister replied.
"Alright, I can understand. I'm on my way to Nigeria. By the way, I sent something to your Opay wallet - a token of joy for hearing your voices," he said, and we hung up the call.
We quickly checked our Opay account and exclaimed in surprise.
There, in our wallet, was a huge sum of 20 million naira.
We looked at each other and ran to Mom's room. We found her in tears, and Dad tapping his foot restlessly on the ground.
"Mummy, we know what's going on. One of you is not our parent, we were sold out," my sister blurted out as she leaned on the bedroom door.
“Now, listen to me well. I am not going back to whoever our real parents are. I want to stay here with you both, though he can resume his responsibility by paying our school fees and providing for all our needs”. I said and my sister gave me a weird look.
"But we will be visiting him often," my sister added.
"Yes. And secondly, I am..."
We were still discussing when I heard my name faintly. I didn't pay attention at first, but then it got louder with a heavy shake on my shoulder.
I opened my eyes and was shocked to realize that I had been sleeping throughout the chemistry class. I quickly checked my phone, no call from a strange number, and my opay wallet was empty.
"Heiii!" I sighed in frustration.
“Yes! The girl in the blue dress, come and draw the resonance structure of benzyl aldehyde." the lecturer said and pointed at me.
I tapped my chest, asking if he meant me. "Yes, you," he confirmed, and I froze.
I hadn't heard a single thing in the class, and now Elon Musk was still on my mind. How was I supposed to answer his question?
With the whole class watching, I walked to the front.
"Oh God, please let this be another dream," I prayed, silently as I took the whiteboard marker from my lecturer.
I blinked several times and pinched myself, but it wasn't a dream. I suddenly became confused, about which side of the board to start the drawing on.
