🗞 Bitcoin Takes Aim at $7K as Deutsche Bank Hails ‘End of Free Market’

Bitcoin (BTC) was aiming for $7,000 on April 14 as a sudden $600 dip gave way to a slow grind upwards as the week began.

Filbfilb: BTC needs “game changer” $7,250 close

Data from Coin360 and Cointelegraph Markets showed BTC/USD challenging $7,000 resistance on Tuesday.

Previously, a slump in traditional market futures produced a sharp downturn, with the pair briefly hitting lows of $6,650 across major exchanges.

In the event, the S&P 500 finished down 1% on the day, Bitcoin recovering to press-time levels of $6,900.

🗞 Justin Sun Accused of Bribing His Way to the Top of the Steem Hierarchy

Major Steem stakeholder Dan Hensley has levied heavy accusations at TRON founder and CEO Justin Sun. According to Hensley’s April 8 writeup, Sun “bribed” his way to the top of the Steem hierarchy with “money, power and users.”

As Cointelegraph reported in early March, Steem was the subject of what many supporters deemed a hostile takeover by Justin Sun. Hensley’s latest allegations shed new light on how the TRON founder allegedly influenced prominent Steemians into doing his bidding. A TRON representative declined to comment on this story.

In a conversation with Cointelegraph, Hensley described Sun’s intention to circumvent established community voting rules. Hensley said:

“Justin was losing the voting war halfway through and started offering people $2,500 each month to run a witness node for him on Steem. I own a dApp called 3speak that was on Steem, he offered us money, power and users.”

🗞 Bitcoin Vaults: Developer Bryan Bishop Releases Prototype for Secure On-Chain Storage

"People are not good at securing their keys," said Bryan Bishop, a longtime bitcoin developer. "To the extent that we can write software better and secure [bitcoin] better, that's a win.

As CoinDesk previously reported, the idea of a bitcoin vault has been around since 2016. The original proposal required a hard fork that core developers never implemented.

But as of today, Bishop is rolling out a fork-free prototype on GitHub and sharing it out over the Bitcoin Core email list.

The basic idea involves storing bitcoin (BTC) on-chain in a particularly secure manner that allows for recovery from security mistakes. The on-chain approach is part of what makes Bishop's vault distinct from a cold wallet.

🗞 An EU Committee Calls for Crypto Rules w/ International Standards

A committee of the European Parliament calls for the end of crypto-related regulatory arbitrage - a way to use loopholes in regulatory systems to avoid unfavorable regulations - proposing that crypto regulation should be made at the international level.

Though various countries have tackled the regulatory challenges posed by the global, easily accessible crypto assets, the national actions aren't necessarily aligned with each other, opening the door to regulatory arbitrage, finds a study on developments of crypto assets and related regulatory concerns and responses, requested by the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) - which, among other things, is responsible for oversight of the European Central Bank.

"To avoid regulatory arbitrage," argues the study, "rulemaking on cryptoassets should take place at the European level, preferably in the execution of international standards."

🗞 Europe Debates COVID-19 Contact Tracing That Respects Privacy

This weekend, Google and Apple announced a massive coronavirus partnership. In the coming months, they’ll be rolling out updates to their operating systems to enable “contact tracing” – the process of identifying carriers of coronavirus, so they can be isolated from the healthy population. The system will track who you come into contact with by recording when your Bluetooth connects with other devices near you.

Contact tracing precedes Google and Apple, of course. During the 2014-16 Ebola crisis in West Africa, the World Health Organization carried out extensive on-the-ground interviews with people regarding where they went, and who they came in contact with. These people were then told to watch for symptoms and to quarantine themselves as needed.
