Continuing on from the theme on my #sublimeSunday post @zekepickleman/sublimesunday-becoming-winter-art it was time to visit another art installation to share today. Take a walk with me and the kids and explore an art exhibit in a small town in Canadia in the dead of winter!
Lights On Stratford
Winters here are quiet and a little challenging for businesses at the best of times. Summers are a hayday for many businesses with the millions annually in tourist dollars. These last couple winters have been even worse on the tourist side but the #shoplocal movement and programs like Lights On Stratford help get people up and out in the community for some fun.
This is a special exhibit because it is on cool Tom Patterson Island in the middle of town and has a galactic scale.
The island is rather small and is a great place to bring a picnic basket in the summer. This winter, it is host to the planets of the galaxy as they orbit around the big sun in the center.
Artists have cleverly reproduced the planets in our solar system and lit up the inflatable planets in a presentation free for anyone to visit.
The earth is one of the neatest ones because of the familiarity, neat colours and perspective reversed as you are looking down onto the planet.
Nature has contributed to the realism as you can see the snow resting upon the top of the northern hemisphere. Right north of that blue Great Lake is where we are reporting from today. Makes me long for the Yucatan peninsula I can see straight south of that where I was only a few months ago.
This has got to be Saturn with that ring no? Maybe accompanied by Venus?
Though it was colder than a witch's boobie, and my picture taking thumb was frozen half off, one of my little ones could not be denied. The city has warned everyone to stay off the ice, like they did last year when everyone skated anyhow, and she just HAD to get out there for a few steps. Makes me miss skating and hope I will be able to post up a #wednesdayskate before the winter is over!
