With the police and buccaneers occupied with keeping the winter sports festival safe, the adventurers were on hand to deal with any ‘ad-hoc’ security worries throughout the city. Sara, Garrick, and Nip had been requested back by their guild, the Fire’s Hand, from their usual job in the real estate clear out business.

Their vice-chair, Oscar Levantus, was chairing the meeting. Dressed in the guild’s uniform, as was expected of all in the upper circle, he was draped in oranges and reds, bathed in metaphorical fire. The guild was one of the larger in Shield Isle, but still not in contention for the top spots throughout the city. Around fifty other adventurers had filled the guild hall, all sat on stools and dining chairs fetched from throughout the guild.

Oscar clapped his hands, sending a burst of flame in the shape of their guild crest, a rooster, above the assembly, signalling the official start of guild business.

“Hello everyone, it’s nice to see us all in the same room. It’s been, what? Five months since we were last together? I’m sure you’re all keen to get back to your idle chit-chat so I’ll try not to keep you.” Oscar was charismatic, arguably more so than the guild leader, but amongst some of the old guard he was less welcomed.

“Where’s Owain?” jeered one of the longest standing members, Stephen. His beard was awash with foam as he thrust his half full tankard of ale toward Oscar from his seat in the front row.

“Owain is attending the Guild Summit, alongside treasurer Michaels.” Oscar was used to Stephen’s outbursts and handled this one as expertly as all the rest. “The Triumvirate have assigned us the north districts of Shield Isle, now I’m sure—"

The crowds erupted into annoyed grumbles and groans.

     “Not the Devil’s Courtyard!”

“Last time we were assigned there the Black Guard tried their darndest to take control—”

“We nearly lost Nip!” shouted Garrick, joining in the upset.

“Right, right.” Oscar’s voice cut through the jeers, “I knew there’d be some resistance to that assignment. So, we asked for more support this year, and thankfully, were granted it. We’ll be pairing up with the Rainbow Knights, who I’m certain will—”

The crowd erupted once more into a cacophony of disdain and frustration.

     “Not the fucking Rainbow Knights!”

“They’re a bunch of useless novices that ain’t worth their weight in—”

“They tried to steal Nip from us!” exclaimed Garrick, eliciting Sara and Nip to shake their heads in embarrassment.
