Very unusually, a wild length of wire grew from the approaching bundles of cables. It slid along the ceiling, before dropping in front of the pair. Electricity danced at its tips.

“Mind your head,” said Recker. He ducked to the side and his friend, Darn, followed suit.

“Any other live cables we need to worry about on the way to your apartment?” Darn looked back at the hazard, wondering if it had caught anyone unawares.

Recker laughed, “Not that I know of!”

Recker turned right, down another corridor, the cables wrapping around the floor. They were odd to walk on; bouncy yet firm. Like a trampoline with no give. Darn pressed his foot into one of the larger cables and felt it push back.

“We’re here.” Recker rummaged through his pocket and pulled out his key card, sliding it through the card reader adjacent to a door on the pairs’ left. He led Darn into the room.

“So, where’s this carrot cake? How’d you afford flour and sugar in the first place?” Darn sniffed, trying to locate the sweet by smell alone. “It smells amazing. Haven’t had any in decades.”

“Just through here, in the kitchen.” Recker placed his keys on the bar, before presenting a foil covered plate to Darn. “I… uh came into a windfall of cash. Found my mum’s old recipe at around the same time. Couldn’t help myself!”

Darn peeled the foil off of the plate. A poorly risen cake, brown and iced, with a missing slice, was staring back at him. “Holy shit! I can’t wait to try some.”
