In 2026, Ru and I decided to celebrate our birthdays outside of Lima. Coincidentally, my birthday fell during our trip to Argentina and Uruguay鈥攏ot because we planned it that way, but purely by chance 馃槀.
So in June, to make the most of the many vacation days we鈥檇 accumulated from work, we decided to visit Oxapampa.
The most comfortable way to get there if you鈥檙e not driving is to take the buses with reclining seats鈥攚e traveled on Movilbus鈥攂ecause the trip is almost 12 hours on the road, so you can get some sleep.
Luckily, our lodging was free because my brother, my sister-in-law, and my little niece were waiting for us there.
We spent five days at their apartment, during which we were able to visit a few places and enjoy some delicious food.

La forma m谩s c贸moda si no viajas en carro es tomar los buses que tienen los asientos tipo cama, nosotros viajamos por Movilbus, porque el viaje son casi 12 horas en carretera as铆 aprovechas de dormir un poco.
Este hospedaje por suerte nos sali贸 gratis porque all谩 nos estaban esperando mi hermano, mi cu帽ada y mi sobrinita.

The first place we visited was the butterfly garden, where you can learn a bit about the local flora and fauna.

Then we went to the historic district. It鈥檚 small鈥攕ince Oxapampa is a town with few residents鈥攂ut it has everything you need. Plus, the architecture鈥攕omething I pay close attention to when I travel鈥攊s very distinctive, because many of the buildings are made of wood.
There are descendants of Austrians and people from other European countries living here, so you can see that influence in the architecture and the cuisine.

Another iconic spot we were able to visit is the Manantial de la Virgen. This is another popular tourist attraction with several natural pools where you can take a dip.
That said, the water is very cold, so getting in is quite a challenge鈥攂ut it鈥檚 worth it.
Admission to this site is 20 soles, or $5.90 at the current exchange rate, per person.
There are also areas to relax and buy local and traditional sweets.
It鈥檚 best to go early because the weather in this area tends to be a bit chilly, and since it鈥檚 surrounded by dense vegetation, you鈥檒l occasionally encounter tiny bugs that bite鈥攁nd bite hard.
That said, it鈥檚 a place where you can also unwind and spend a pleasant time with family or friends.

Oxapampa is another place I鈥檝e added to my list of places to revisit because it offers many outdoor activities, the locals are very friendly, and you can have an incredible time there.
Oxapampa es otro de los lugares que sumo a mi lista de volver a visitar porque tiene muchas actividades que se pueden hacer al aire libre, la gente local es muy amable y puedes pasar momentos incre铆bles.
