Changing the Kitchen Floor / Cambiando el Piso de la Cocina

My mother's house is a small, humble and simple space, to which the years have not passed in vain and, therefore, today shows signs of deterioration and lack of investment, this because the burden of a large family and the constant economic ups and downs that the region where I live negatively affect those who have fewer resources. But fortunately I have grown up, all my siblings work and now it is our task to extend our hand of solidarity so that my mother can have a totally decent place to live.

La casa de mi mamá es un espacio pequeño, humilde y sencillo, al cual los años no le han pasado en vano y, por lo tanto, hoy en día muestra signos de deterioro y de falta de inversión, esto debido a que la carga de una familia numerosa y los constantes vaivenes económicos que atraviesa la región en donde vivo afectan de forma negativa a aquellas personas que tienen menos recursos. Pero afortunadamente yo ya he crecido, todos mis hermanos trabajan y ahora es nuestra tarea extender nuestra mano solidaria para que mi madre cuente con un espacio totalmente digno en dónde vivir.

For several years we have been making investments to improve each room of the house, therefore, the face that shows today is very different, but even so there is still much to be done, since correcting years of lack of maintenance is not an easy task, so it takes a cold mind to order the priorities and implement each project individually. This is how we decided to partially change the floor of the living room and kitchen, which was originally polished cement, but by this time was already in very bad condition, so my mom considered it essential that this project was executed, for this the only requirement she demanded was that the new floor was terracotta, because for her it is an easy to clean material, it is anti-slip and at the same time looks very nice on the entire surface of the house.

Desde hace varios años se han estado realizando inversiones para mejorar cada estancia de la casa, por lo tanto, la cara que muestra hoy en día es muy diferente, pero aun así todavía falta bastante por realizar, ya que corregir años de falta de mantenimiento no es tarea fácil, por lo cual hace falta mente fría poder ordenar las prioridades y ejecutar cada proyecto de forma individual. Es de esta forma como decidimos cambiar de manera parcial el piso de la sala y de la cocina, el cual originalmente era de cemento pulido, pero para este momento ya se encontraba en muy mal estado, por lo cual mi mamá consideraba esencial que este proyecto fuera ejecutado, Para ello el único requerimiento que ella exigió y era que el nuevo piso fuera de terracota, ya que para ella es un material fácil de limpiar, es antirresbalante y al mismo tiempo luce muy lindo en toda la superficie de la casa.

First of all, when the workers made the preliminary assessment, they determined that the previous floor had to be almost completely removed, some structural corrections had to be made and then the new floor had to be raised several centimeters to correct some distortions that had no reason to exist. Therefore, 3 sacks of cement, 10 meters of terracotta and half a meter of sand were initially requested, which should be enough to carry out all this work.

En primer lugar, cuando los obreros hicieron la evaluación preliminar determinaron que el piso anterior había que removerlo casi por completo, se debieron hacer unas correcciones estructurales y posteriormente elevar el nuevo piso varios centímetros, esto para corregir algunas distorsiones que no tenían razón de ser. Por lo tanto, en un principio se solicitaron 3 sacos de cemento, 10 metros de terracota y medio metro de arena, lo cual debería ser suficiente para llevar a cabo toda esta obra.

The workers started working on a Monday and continued to work continuously for about 2 days, in which we had to get used to a sea of dirt, an incessant dust and several restricted spaces, therefore, it was necessary to move the entire kitchen into a room and vacate the entire living room area, so that the work could be done in an uninterrupted and efficient way.

Los obreros comenzaron a trabajar un lunes y de forma continua siguieron a través de unos 2 días, en los cuales tuvimos que acostumbrarnos a un mar de tierra un polvo incesante y diversos espacios restringidos, por lo tanto, se vio necesario mudar toda la cocina hacia una habitación y desocupar en su totalidad el área de la sala, esto para que los trabajos se dieran de forma ininterrumpida y eficiente.

Little by little the new face of the house became more and more visible, the characteristic reddish color of the terracotta began to advance throughout the kitchen and the living room, giving the whole space a more pleasant, harmonious and elegant atmosphere.

Poco a poco el nuevo rostro de la casa se hacía cada vez más visible, el característico color rojizo de las terracotas comenzaban a avanzar a lo largo y ancho de la cocina y la sala, brindándole a todo el espacio un ambiente más agradable, armonioso y elegante.

Undoubtedly the results were as expected, my mom was very happy with the work done, which was necessary, since this way the house is gradually becoming a better place, in a more orderly space, with more uniform characteristics and at the same time easier to maintain. Personally I am also pleased to see this work completed, because although it is a small step in what should be done, it is really a great leap in the aesthetic, emotional and practical, I hope that with this unstoppable pace we continue to improve every space in my mom's house, so that in this way she can enjoy a peaceful old age in a nice and pleasant place.

Sin duda alguna los resultados fueron los esperados, mi mamá quedó muy contenta con el trabajo realizado, el cual era necesario, ya que de esta forma poco a poco la casa se va transformando en un mejor lugar, en un espacio más ordenado, con características más uniformes y al mismo tiempo más fácil de mantener. En lo personal también me complace ver culminada esta obra, ya que si bien se trata de un pequeño paso en lo que se debe hacer, en realidad es un gran salto en lo estético, lo emocional y lo práctico, espero que con este ritmo indetenible sigamos mejorando cada espacio de la casa de mi mamá, para que de esta forma ella pueda gozar de una vejez tranquila en un lugar lindo y agradable.
