Walking Under the Southern Sunset / Caminando Bajo el Atardecer Sureño

Today I’m here to tell you about a cross-border trip. It turns out that Buenos Aires has been one of those destinations that has completely captivated me, since it’s a large, cosmopolitan city with all the characteristics of a bustling and, at the same time, overwhelming capital—where time flies by at an impressive speed, people are always in a hurry, and the pace of life in general is much faster.

Hoy les vengo a contar un paseo transfronterizo. Resulta que Buenos Aires ha sido uno de esos destinos que me ha enganchado por completo, puesto que se trata de una ciudad grande y cosmopolita, con todas las características propias de una capital bulliciosa y al mismo tiempo arrolladora, en donde el tiempo transcurre a una velocidad impresionante, las personas siempre están apuradas y el ritmo de la vida en términos generales es mucho más acelerado.

But like any good modern city, it also has those spaces where you can find a haven of tranquility—places designed for peaceful relaxation, a healthy walk, or simply a breather in the midst of grueling days.

Pero como buena ciudad moderna, también cuenta con esos espacios en donde aterrizamos en un mar de tranquilidad, lugares diseñados para el esparcimiento tranquilo, una caminata saludable o simplemente un respiro en medio de jornadas que son titánicas.

When you arrive in a new city, you have to take things slowly, since there are situations that are unfamiliar to visitors, places that may not be the most suitable for certain activities, and areas where danger increases with every step—especially when you’re a foreigner. That’s why I always try to get to know the area I’m in well—not just to limit myself to tourist spots, but to enjoy everything responsibly and safely.

Cuando uno llega a una ciudad nueva, tiene que tomarse las cosas con calma, ya que existen situaciones que son desconocidas para el visitante, lugares que quizás no son los más adecuados para ciertas actividades y zonas en donde el peligro se incrementa a cada paso y más cuando se es extranjero. Es por ello que siempre trato de conocer bien el espacio en el cual me encuentro, para así no solo encasillarme en las áreas turísticas, sino que la idea es disfrutar de todo, pero con responsabilidad y seguridad.

That’s how I ended up at this spot, which struck me as a really beautiful place; it’s Plaza Francia, located in the Recoleta neighborhood. It’s a place that seems to skirt the city, even though we’re actually right in the middle of it, but here we find a green space with impeccably maintained walkways, works of art that have been exhibited all over the world, and an urban landscape well worth admiring.

Es así como llegué a este paseo que me pareció un lugar muy lindo; se trata de la Plaza Francia, ubicada en la zona de Recoleta. Es un lugar que pareciera bordear la ciudad, aunque realmente estamos dentro de ella, pero acá encontramos un área verde con caminería impecable, obras de arte que le han dado la vuelta al mundo y un paisaje urbano digno de admirar.

I decided to take a walk here just before sunset so I could enjoy a side of Buenos Aires that has always caught my attention but that I’d never really had the chance to experience firsthand. That’s how I enjoyed a walk with the sunset painting the horizon; I watched as the sky changed color by the minute, as clouds scurried across the sky, and as darkness gradually gave way to artificial light.

Decidí caminar por acá justo antes de la puesta de sol, para de esta forma poder disfrutar de una faceta de Buenos Aires que siempre me ha llamado la atención y que verdaderamente no había tenido la oportunidad de vivir en carne propia. Es así como disfruté de una caminata con el ocaso marcando las notas del horizonte; vi cómo el cielo cambiaba de color a cada minuto, cómo algunas nubes cruzaban de forma apresurada y cómo poco a poco la oscuridad le daba paso a la iluminación artificial.

Walking through a cool Buenos Aires is a truly pleasant experience; here, the architecture seems to evoke the Old World, while the weather plays along. All of this creates the perfect atmosphere for taking photos, enjoying the city, and realizing just how wonderful it can be—and how often we underestimate our own towns and cities, without realizing that they are unique places brimming with interesting things.

Caminar por un Buenos Aires fresco es una verdadera experiencia placentera; acá la arquitectura pareciera evocar al viejo continente, mientras que el clima le sigue el juego. Todo esto hace que el ambiente se vuelva propicio para tomar fotografías, disfrutar de la ciudad y darse cuenta de lo maravillosa que puede llegar a ser y que muchas veces infravaloramos nuestros propios pueblos y ciudades, sin darnos cuenta de que son espacios únicos y repletos de cosas interesantes.

With a slightly chilly breeze, I bid farewell to this hike in the low latitudes, where things are a bit different from the Caribbean, but where the people are incredible, the landscapes are beautiful, and the experiences are extraordinary.

Con una brisa un poquito fría me despido de esta caminata realizada a bajas latitudes, en donde las cosas son un tanto diferentes al Caribe, pero en donde la gente es increíble, los paisajes son hermosos y las experiencias extraordinarias.
