![ENGLISH]

I was recently talking with a friend who told me about a problem she’s having at work, and that the best thing she’s decided to do is to hold her tongue or keep her mouth shut—whichever sounds better. Words can hurt, they can cause harm, and they can lead to problems if we don’t know how to say things properly. It also depends on the way they’re said, and we have to keep in mind that not everyone thinks the same way.

Holding our tongue doesn’t mean letting others walk all over us, but rather that we can say what we need to at another time when we’re not angry, or that we can choose our words more carefully so as not to hurt others. There’s a Bible verse that says something along the lines of “we must keep our tongues from evil,” because the tongue is the cause of many fires—that is, many fights and disputes.

We also need to exercise self-control over our bodies, because not everything we think in the moment needs to be said—the words we speak cannot be taken back, and if they cause harm, we can’t later say we were wrong, since the damage will already have been done—just like a piece of paper that’s crumpled and can’t be smoothed out again. What’s done is done, even if that’s how we feel in the moment; it’s not good to say anything when we’re irritable.

Before we speak, we should think: Will what I’m about to say hurt someone or help them? Over the years, I’ve learned that it’s often better to stay silent, think things through carefully, and take a deep breath. That’s what my friend is doing every day, and it’s for the best—otherwise, it would cause problems in her workplace, and stirring up trouble isn’t the goal. It’s better to stay silent and act wisely in these situations.

That’s what self-control is all about—having the strength to hold back in moments when anger threatens to take hold of us, or when our tongue is tempted to say things it shouldn’t. After all, the tongue can build bridges and bring people together, but it can also start fires, tear families apart, and leave deep scars on the people we love most. That’s why we must exercise self-control.
