The Catacombs of Mud and Frost

The air down here smelled of damp earth, frozen roots, and the crowded breath of dozens of small bodies.

Squeak-Squeak, a young rat with shivering whiskers, pressed his tiny paws against the icy wall of the tunnel. Below them, a thread of dark water trickled through a hand-dug channel, carrying the faint warmth of subterranean decomposition.

"Is it true that the sun used to burn the leaves above?" asked Pip, the youngest of the litter, dragging his tail along the mud floor of the gallery.

Marrow, their older sister, stopped near a vault held together by thick oak roots. She turned her dark, sharp eyes toward them. Her fur was scarred from narrow escapes, but her voice carried the steady rhythm of those who hold the memory of the clan.

"The sun is a ghost story, little ones," Marrow whispered, her voice echoing softly through the earthen archways. "Up there, the frost turns blood into glass. Down here, we survive. We do not live—not yet—but our lungs still draw breath."

The Founders: Claw, Stone, and Shadow

As they trotted deeper into the maze of igloo-like mud chambers, Pip looked up at the heavy ceiling blocks shaped from frozen peat.

"Who built all this for us, sister? Was it the great beasts?"

"No single creature built it alone," Marrow replied, guiding them through a narrow junction. "When the endless winter fell and choked the swamp, the first ones to break the hard earth were the Kanja Miners. They had small hands and sharp picks, but they were fleeing the cold just like us. It is said that in the darkest night, when their strength failed, a nameless mist—wearing the Cloak of the Undying—and a great crow named Lenore appeared among them."

Squeak-Squeak stopped, his ears twitching. "The mist and the crow? Are they real, or just stories told by the old ones?"

"They are as real as the shadow that falls when a candle dies," Marrow said solemnly. "The mist used its magic cards to guide the miners, and together with the mighty Terraceous Grunt, whose massive stone shoulders held up the collapsing ceilings, they carved the first catacombs. They created these channels and mud vaults so the forest creatures wouldn't freeze in their sleep. They laid the foundation of this land under the ice."

"Where are they now?" asked Pip, looking into the dark shaft ahead. "Why don't they stay with us in the tunnels?"

"Because their path is not confined to the earth," Marrow whispered. "Some say the mist still wanders the upper woods seeking the lost spark of fire; others swear Lenore watches from the highest dead branches, guarding our air vents. They left us the walls, but they belong to the night."

The Corsair and the Kinship of the Depths

They reached a wide chamber where a small river trickled past wooden scrap structures. Near the bank, Marrow paused, looking at a crude mark scratched into a damp wooden beam—the shape of a crossbone and a tiny paw.

"Not everyone who helped shape this world came from the mines or the clouds," Marrow continued softly. "Have you heard of Mickvir, the Ratbound Corsair? Long before the eternal winter, when he was just an abused orphan starving in the damp cargo holds of pirate ships, the rats were his only family. They kept him warm, they gathered around him, and they protected him from the lash. Even when the black waters of Mortis transformed him from the waist down into a towering sea serpent with eyes of icy blue, the rats never abandoned him, and he never forgot them. Wherever he treads now, the rats gather first, knowing he is one of them."

Marrow looked down at her siblings. "Remember this, little ones: whether it is a lost child raised by vermin, a goblin touched by the abyss, a silent mist wearing a shroud, a crow in the dark , a young blind archer understimated by her clan—we are all bound to one another. In Praetoria, no creature is truly separate. We survive only because we support our own, across every shape and form."

The Unsettling Omen

The three rats paused at the edge of a deep vertical shaft that led into the pitch-black abyss below Shadowcomb. A cold draft rose from the depths, smelling of ancient rot and unworked stone.

"Sister..." Squeak-Squeak shivered, pulling his nose back from the edge. "If we have the tunnels, the miners, and the channels... are we safe forever?"

Marrow stood still on the edge of the ledge. The faint bioluminescence of fungi reflected in her dark eyes, casting a cold gleam over her profile. She slowly shook her head.

"Nothing built on borrowed ground is safe, little sister. Whoever cast the spell that bound this forest in ice can undo it at a whim—or shatter these roofs over our heads whenever they please. The shadow beneath us never sleeps."

Marrow looked up toward the ceiling, where the roots tapped against the frozen mud like talons on wood, and recited in a low, chilling cadence the lines Lenore Nevermore once left etched upon the bark of the hollow tree:

“Deep beneath the swamp’s cold floor,
Lies a dark and hungry lore.
What was built of earth and stone,
Is but borrowed, not our own.
When the sorcerer breaks the thread,
Mud will swallow where we tread—
Shadow claims what came before,
Only that, and nothing more.”

Silence fell over the tunnel, heavy and cold. The little rats pressed close to their sister's side, while high above in the frozen canopy, a faint, distant beat of heavy wings echoed through the dark.

antiguo profano.

construimos con barro y ceniza,
Es prestado,
el tiempo lo triza.

Cuando el hechizo rompa el hilo sutil
El fango tragará
al siervo y al vil;
