To what extent are we capable of carrying our obsessions? This film faces the modern world head-on and dares to engage with the topics that are generating the most discussions, such as conspiracy theories and manipulation on social media.
More specifically, these small rabbit holes that increasingly lead us deeper toward more specific topics. And how the powerful, a group represented by these CEO characters, dominate the world through a sort of corporate mafia, which in this film is portrayed in a very curious way.
Because, as such, the center of the film seems to start from an absurdity, and this is entirely intentional. Because in it we have two paranoid cousins who kidnap the CEO of a pharmaceutical agency, claiming that she is an alien.
Before this event occurs, we see the preparation of these cousins. One of them, clearly the leader, and the other with some type of intellectual capacity to carry out their plan. A physical, methodical preparation, as if it were not the first time, something we realize as the film progresses.
On the other hand, the CEO also seems like a very methodical woman; she trains, prepares physically, has strict beauty routines, both seem to be inhuman. But perhaps that is another of the themes the film questions: what makes us humans?
Because, from the side of the kidnappers, from the very beginning we can see characteristics that we normally would not associate with humanity. It could be said to be a necessary deshumanization to carry out their mission. But here we immediately confront one of the first questions: how much humanity would we be willing to surrender in pursuit of discovering a truth?
And more so when it is a truth about which, if we discovered it, we could not have any control. For the kidnappers, these facts do not seem to carry the slightest weight, since they have it installed deep within something, something that this consumption of social media, this infinite scroll, has damaged almost as if its algorithm were the one controlling us, rather than this elite they believe they are facing.
Thus, after the kidnapping and a series of processes to prevent this CEO from communicating with what they believe is a mothership circling the Earth, the cousins begin a rigorous interrogation amidst the practically inexpressive calm of hers.
They do not stop with words and proceed to a progressive physical torture, slow, but which they believe is the only way to find this truth. One to which this character responds in a rather logical manner, resorting to this kind of manipulation, in part mocking them and letting them know what they want to hear to free themselves from all these processes.
In this kind of mental game of hide and seek, we gradually enter into the motivations of the principal architect of the kidnapping, which is nothing more than a small revenge against this pharmaceutical company directed by this CEO, whom he intentionally believes left his mother in a vegetative state and is causing bees to disappear. Points perhaps disconnected for us, but in whose mind everything forms part of a grand macabre plan.
Regarding the bees, which are a constant visual metaphor in the film, we can foresee that this protagonist cares for them with devotion, just as he cares for his mother. He knows that the bees are disappearing because he is a beekeeper and the hives are increasingly depopulated, something that could perfectly be attributed to the pharmaceutical industry or any large industry, but which he specifically relates to the industry directed by this character.
Thus, in a subtle way and by way of coincidence, we see how a character is introduced who, although on screen for a short time, reveals much of the initial traumas of this protagonist. Apparently, he was abused since childhood for not having sufficient protection from this person he does protect with all his strength, which is the vegetable that now represents his mother, and that, in an unexpected twist of the film, when it reaches its climax, will make a decision that will be crucial: a point of no return.
Thus, as this CEO attempts to free herself without much success and go through one of the most violent and unexpected scenes, we see how the final room opens, this room where she accepts her role as an extraterrestrial and pretends to lead the protagonist toward her mothership. This creates a rather particular ambiguity because, as the film grows, our suspicion that this conspiracy is real grows, but without any truly solid anchor, only viewing it from the perspective of the eyes of this totally deranged man.
She tells him that to free herself he must go to his office, that there is the connection to this ship, and after handing him an apparently common calculator, she locks him inside a closet. But our protagonist was not going to take things so easily either; he goes loaded with explosives and in the film's climax, spoiler>! [Spoiler] hidden text
, this ends up exploding into a thousand pieces inside this closet.
We do not know if under the influence of this supposed calculator, if because of the heat and body sweat he already had with all these explosives stuck to his body, or if there was something more. When this happens, his head hits the head of this CEO, providing a very comical metaphor about the clash of their ideas, this confrontation, but in a physical way, to which she faints, but when she awakens, we realize something.
She flees the ambulance that supposedly was supposed to attend to her to now, yes, introducing herself through her closet, reach the mothership, giving a total twist to what we believed about the film up to that point. Because if the film all along positions us, makes us see it from a realistic side, assuming that this woman is kidnapped by these two men who have completely lost their reason, but upon giving us this ending it changes the perspective of everything we have seen and leaves us in the role of true ingénues.
Thus, the film in itself is a questioning of what we believe is real and towards our almost instantaneous positioning on issues about which we do not have all the information. The film ends with a debate about the destiny of humanity and this extraterrestrial species deciding that humanity was a design error that they committed and that this error must be corrected.
After exploding a dome where the planet Earth was supposedly located, we see how all of humanity falls dead without screams, without suffering, without dramas, but there bugonia occurs, the title of this film, that death that brings life and we see how little time the bees begin to repopulate planet Earth again.
Being this the perfect metaphor to tell us that the real problem was never this confrontation between good and bad, reason or not, but rather that humanity not only destroys itself, but constantly destroys the world that houses it. Thus, this film closes without heroes or villains, giving us a lesson in humility to all.
