✍️ Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes, mi penúltimo cuento:
-- Has llegado un poquito tarde, Horacio.

✍️ Today I want to share with you my penultimate story:
Horacio hadn’t been able to sleep all night. Nightmares, one after another, kept him awake. They were like spirits crowding his private space.
With his eyes wide open and lying on the bed, he muttered:
“What a hellish night—my 75 years are going to weigh even more tomorrow.”
Still, he figured that at the crack of dawn, he would once again be able to spring out of bed in one swift motion.
“Horacio… Horacio… Horacio…”
A deep, unfamiliar voice insisted on being heard.
“Who could it be at this hour?” he whispered.
“Horacio… Horacio,” the voice called out again.
“Coming!” he replied, with a mix of annoyance and curiosity.
Upon opening the door, he saw before him a strange figure—someone he didn’t recall ever having seen before.
“Who are you?” Horacio asked. “I am God’s messenger—or, rather, an emissary sent by the caretaker of the village cemetery, sir,” the strange being replied.
He continued:
“I come on his behalf, as I told you; you must get there as quickly as you can.”
“Do you understand?”
“But what happened?” Horacio asked.
“There are souls in torment, sir—souls in torment,” the messenger said, then walked away, repeating the same phrase over and over until he vanished.
Horacio did not understand what he had just heard.
Yet, in a sudden, illuminating flash, he was drawn to that sacred ground—the very place where his own loved ones rest.
Standing now at the threshold of the cemetery, he found the darkness to be absolute—yet it was permeated by strange scents, murmurs, and laughter. ***
—Could this be a clandestine party? —he wondered.
As he cast his gaze further, he was left perplexed. Amidst the shadows of crypts and crosses, tilted by the passage of time, he saw no terrifying specters—only old acquaintances, those who had long been absent, now sitting upon the graves and sharing a drink of invisible rum. They were laughing boisterously at the misfortunes of the world of the living.
Seeing him arrive with his weary gait, one of them stood up, offered him a stone seat, and said, quite naturally:
—You’re a bit late, Horacio. But we’ve saved something special for your first gathering...
Suddenly, the fear vanished. He began to feel the weight of his seventy-five years dissolving away—as if an avalanche of relief were stripping him of his pains, prejudices, fears, and resentments.
He realized that here, in this other dimension, lay the only refuge where life could continue in peace.
