The Long-Awaited Flight..
➥ Greetings, dear Hivers, from #hivecuba
The long-awaited Sunday has finally arrived: October 18, 2026.
We decided days in advance to set off at 8:00 in the morning. An hour or so would be plenty of time to reach the airport in Santiago.
The October morning is turning out to be absolutely splendid.
The main—and only—access route we must take is the "Carretera Central" (Central Highway), though, in all honesty, few sections of it remain in a passable state. Whenever I bring up this subject, I never hesitate to praise the engineering feat—accomplished in just four years by investors, humble laborers, and everyone else who contributed their part—that brought this monumental project to life in "pre-revolutionary" Cuba. Nearly 100 years since its inception—a milestone that will be reached in 2027—the infrastructure conceived back then, including overpasses, railway crossings, bridges, and other elements of the transport network, still bears witness to the ingenuity, perseverance, integrity, and many other human values that defined our reality at that time.
But anyway, that is a topic for another occasion. Let’s get to the point:
Our trip to the airport was, above all, driven by a sentimental reason: the arrival of my firstborn son from the U.S. back to his homeland—to the place where he was born.
The flight that operates daily between the airports in Miami and Santiago de Cuba was scheduled to arrive, as is customary, at approximately 10:30 a.m.
We were already there an hour ahead of time. ***
So, I decided to walk through areas of this historic institution—a place I’ve known since I was a child.
A polycrisis like the one we are enduring is brutal, and its reach extends to everything. What I began to notice this time were perceptions quite different from those I had experienced on previous visits to the place. For me, many things have changed—though it still retains its majesty, its iconic character, and its good people. I will not go into further detail.
The time is drawing near! I check a flight tracker (app) and confirm that the flight—American Airlines flight AA 1519 (Miami – Santiago de Cuba)—is, in fact, already nearly over the landing runway.
