Canto redondo a Montaraz [Esp-Eng]

Round song to Montaraz [Esp-Eng]
Didn’t know him, he died a year before I was born. I look at his photo as the grandfather who speaks from the deep sepia of the image, from the conviction that emanates from his eyes and which, surely, was poured into paper. And I read it, of course (what better way to know him?). Gilberto E. Rodríguez (Las Tunas, 1908-1989), the 20th century Major Poet in Las Tunas, the one who said: "I will always be / where spring says his word florida (...). Wherever the fatherland is an elbow / open for the nest of the popular pigeon."
A quick journey through his poetry demonstrates mastery of various strofic forms (decima, free verse, romances, tercetes, quintets...), yet it is his most faithful companion sonnet. You were in the light, wide and precise / like the precious light of a candle, / and in the silent distance of the path / played with the sparrow of your smile. / You were in the light, trapped in the breeze / fleeing from a seaport, / and I said goodbye to you with the hat, / the musical farewell that is improvised." (Song for an unforgettable love). Gilberto E
Writer and researcher Maritza Batista notes in her essay Gilberto E. Rodríguez, the 20th century poet at Las Tunas: "His poetry is distinguished by the elegance of verses made with exquisite care and all rigor, so that having his books is to enjoy good reading, acquire a literary culture and I, as on other occasions, insist on his sonnet book Migajas de luz. With this book, it is undeniable what the Tunero poets repeat: he is the major sonetist, knew how to start a sonnet to catch its receiver and at the end there was the perfect brooch, no need to aspire to more, the necessary was said, with no darkness at all and yes with multiple rays of light".
"Love and other human passions awaken him the lyre, which rides farther, inside his chest. He also sings to several of our leaders, figures such as José Martí, Vicente García and Antonio Maceo, men of fire and conscience. The latter, for example, inspired verses in the style of: "And he goes down the path of the winds / hurricane of war, could not / listen to the Titan more symphony / than that which solfeited his torments." He also glimpses a concern for the social environment, a rebellion against inequalities, a soul of people.
"His poetry is permanence and fidelity to an aesthetic ideal, from the origin to the last circumstances. The stripping of reality to clothe it with dreams and new realities is the magical center of its creation. The language permeated by Romanticism is found more here, fundamentally alongside the sparkles and essences of postmodernist imagery, the regusto by the word, search and novelty in lexical structures, illuminated constructions, la tropología tradicional con frescos aires de modernidad y elegancia", deepene el escritor, investigador y crítico Antonio Gutiérrez en su libro Un poeta cerca del olvido (editorial Sanlope, 2003), texto premiado con la Beca Gilberto E. Rodríguez 2001.
According to this author, his most popular poem is Confidencia, in which he confesses that one day he will plant "the tent / on the earth of any place", and then concludes: "There I shall eternalize my fantasy, / smoking a bite of poetry / in the fragrant pipe of the landscape."
Montaraz (his pseudonym), graduated as a journalist at the national college of journalists Márquez Sterling, published several books of poetry, including 25 poems (1945), Sementera (Havana, 1949), El libro de las cien décimas (posthumous edition, 1991), La hora sin pájaros (1997) and Canto redondo (2008).
"This poetic production, attested by its quality, allowed Gilberto, founder of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac) in our territory, to achieve recognitions such as: the plaques Mayor General Vicente García and El Cucalambé; as well as the Premio Por la Cultura Rosano Zamora Paadín and receiving the Réplica de la Pluma de El Cucalambé", says Maritza Batista.
According to Antonio Gutiérrez, he was an admirer of the work of Cucalambeana and even won several of his journalistic awards with the subject of the bardo tunero. A poet so attached to the terroir was logical that he wrote decimals proper to his identity, enjoy this Cuban sunrise in an octosyllabic rhythm in his morning walk: 'The fine clarinet of a rooster / breaks the silence, the dawn / with its guiding lamp / gives us sound, Good day! / as she releases her harmony / the whispering palm'.
"It also includes the local color and the singing homage to his coterran, the greatest cultor of the tenth popular written in Hispanoamerica in the nineteenth century, Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo, El Cucalambé (Las Tunas 1829-Santiago de Cuba 1861) when 'y bajo el dagame en pie' glosses the verse of the bard: 'on the shore of a palm tree / That bathes the fertile Cornito' in his poem Song with an Montone accent, drunk with a key, and are," adds the scholar.
Also, he was an Honorary Member of the literary workshop El Cucalambé and joined the UNEAC. In addition, he published in different magazines and newspapers.
"And so Gilberto was someone like a king for the entourage of writers in the capital municipality. He was rightly admired (...), his connotative language, spontaneous and fluid, overflowed the good use of literary resources as paradoxes: 'And you will be forever / orbit where I wake up my dream is adorned'; metaphors: 'Mature joy bathing in my eyes'; personification: 'In the rose that dreams, which is stripped naked by water'; símil: 'Like a river of restless virginal currents / I was barefoot at the encounter with mature horizons',' he summarizes Maritza Batista.
I look again at the photo in sepia, which speaks of character and simplicity found. It seems that "the snail of the wind offered me your homage." I am glad that the 31st Book Fair in the province (March 16-19, 2023) has decided to honor you. Unfortunately, we still don’t know you well enough. I hope these crumbs of light do some good for this purpose.
