¿Qué iba a hacer?
Me parece verlo.

Alfonso Silvestre, on the centenary of his birth [Esp-Eng]

Juan Manuel Maestre Bello was small even when he discovered as a spectator the immense figure of Alfonso Silvestre Sierra. "At first I didn’t like it because, for a child, the bad is always the bad," evokes today the actor and multimedia director by recalling his memorable interpretations of negative characters back in the 70s.
"I watched him in several episodes. In The Red Mask, which brought together various talents of Cuban television, he was the magician who murdered. The first time I saw him doing well was in El mambisito, where he played Perucho Figueredo. In fact, following this interpretation, years later Silvestre showed me a program where Enrique Núñez Rodríguez said: 'Thank you Alfonso, for teaching me to love the people of my homeland,' says Maestre. And quickly adds: "He was a very serious man when it came to taking on a role. I researched each figure intensively and gave it a human dimension."
Juan Manuel highlights his footprint in the training of other professionals. "Many people whom we recognize as talented actors have always labeled him a teacher. This is the case of Veronica Lynn and Pedro Álvarez. Once they were here and she said to her husband: 'Pedro, run, we have to go see Professor Alfonso at his house,' she adds. She also confesses how she told him anecdotes that today seem "a matter of legends." One of 'them' narrates: "In the morning, early, I arrived at the ICRT (Cuban Institute of Radio and Television), on 23rd street, Vedado, where there was an excellent cafeteria. And there he was, having his coffee and smoking a pipe.
"Then the producer of an episode came and said to him: 'Alfonso, take this libretto, it’s from today.' What was he supposed to do? Back then, television was live. But half an hour later, a novel director or someone else would come with phrases like: 'We rehearsed at that time.' So he spent the day learning things... He also took his little ones for a while in town. He also took his little shots from time to time with other iconic figures, perhaps to take all the stress away."
The complete artist, who was an active member of the Pro-Arte Patronage, the most transcendent spontaneous cultural movement that Las Tunas has had, is drawn immense in the memory of Juan Manuel. "With him one became a professional; he taught you to love acting with the discipline and dedication it requires." From his gaze, emerges the pride of having known him and the greatness of a man who, being dependent on an establishment, came to embrace the theater and shudder it forever.
"I have the honor of having worked with Alfonso. First, he advised and prepared me in the house of culture Tomasa Varona. I consulted him a lot. He always had a kind of affection for me, perhaps for my family. He was very close to my aunt Bertica, who had been her companion in Pro-Arte. I remember that once, I was still an imberbe boy, I said to him: 'Because I want... because in Las Tunas'. And he told me: 'You are wrong, in Las Tunas there has been a theater, and your family is proof that it existed here long before.'
This dedication to the demonstration "infected" not a few people. "He came up, gave us advice, had a very slow way of speaking, a loving people... I think I see him. In addition, I have the honor of being an actor in the last production he directed: Two lost on a dirty night. There was Roberto Reyes and me. It was the 90s and it was a success. He even entrusted me with the dramaturgical arrangement in that piece, as well as playing the character of Toño. He knew how to listen to us... Then he advised us on some plays, but that was his last stage performance as such.
"Alfonso had the soul of a good child, the laughter frank, spontaneous. For the young people who were starting out in this world of art, he was a theatrical father. And not just me; many musicians, magicians and other artists are in debt to him. As for me, I absorbed his professionalism and dedication to work.
He taught us that the theater is a kind of magical being that gives everything it has to receive the greatest prize: the applause of the spectator", summarizes Maestre Bello.

ANOTHER VOICE FROM GRATITUDE
"Indisputably, he is a cultural icon in our city. His family’s influences encouraged him as well. One of his relatives owned the cinema - theater El Cucalambé, where great figures passed by. An aunt of hers liked to stage plays with children. His house was visited by outstanding artists. And all this nurtured the vocation. So it is no surprise that from an early age, he experimented with singing, dancing and acting", says the Performing Arts specialist Alberto Carlos Estrada Segura.
He points out how in the 1930s he approaches the world of radio. An example of this is its link with the station CMKE and, in the following decade, with Radio Tunas CMKG. It evokes that young man who, around a piano, together with other creative bisoons, participates in the birth of Pro-Arte, "becoming one of its leaders and where he did everything a little, even singing sometimes. El dilema, Los zapaticos de rosa, El cancionero del niño, Estampas cubanas and Alborada are some of the works in which he was involved, whether as director, actor or both. The latter, by Pablo Armando Fernández, was directed by him."
However, explains Estrada, "in the face of huge needs, he asks the authorities and institutions to build a hall for theatrical art, because this expression is spoken out loud and the Rivera theater (Hoy "Tunas") was very large, not suitable for it. When that didn’t happen, he was discouraged... So he decided to try other horizons in Havana, where he quickly became noticed."
Alberto points out how quickly in the capital Silvestre’s skills opened one door after another. Contracts on several television channels, directing plays, acting in dramatised (Sector 40, ICR Theater...) and much more would catapult him to stardom.

"In 1954 he put up the play Amok and invited Veronica Lynn to work with him. Today, the actress she is today thanks him.
"Alfonso was, in short, a man who made himself at once, studying daily, without an academy and yet he was a professor. Famous directors called him because they were aware of his quality. He made radio, theater, television and cinema. And, with incredible humanity, he left all his fame and returned to Las Tunas when his family needed him. But here he again inserted himself into culture, in the 90s, and was artistic director, announcer, sound technician, juror at carnivals... For me, he is the most prominent actor that Las Tunas has given", he points out.
FINAL NOTES
Much could be said of an artist of the stature of Silvestre, who came into the world on 9 October 100 years ago. Unfortunately, a complicated wound because of diabetes, it would end his existence. But here they are following in the footsteps of actors such as Juan Manuel Maestre, Luis Andrés Till, Elizabeth Borrero, Adelaida Villavicencio and others who remember him so fondly and thank him...
These days the anecdotes return like those hot ones that were made at his house in Las Tunas, also seasoned by the love of friends. There is a day in his honor and the site of the historical memory of this city, which bears his name, reveals important facts. But beyond all that, there remains the challenge of perpetuating his work, something that does not fit in a plaque or a celebration of some days. He was too big to be locked in dates. Let’s all get to know him better; it’s the best way to honor him.
