THE MOST VIRAL HUSTLE IN NIGERIA RIGHT NOW __WEEK238 (ED2)
The One Trend That Has My Full Attention Right Now
If you live in Nigeria right now, one trend is everywhere - everybody wants to become a content creator and make money online.
Open TikTok, Instagram, Facebook - every second person is selling something, doing a voice-over, doing market vlog in Wuse Market, or teaching how they make 50k in one week from their phone. Even my neighbour who was selling handmade slippers last year, now she has ring light and she is doing "A Day In My Life As An Onitsha Girl" videos.
At first, I was laughing. I thought, "Everybody just wants to blow by force." But later, I started paying attention, because I am also part of it. I am on Hive, I write, I try to build online too.
This trend taught me three big things:
First, it taught me that Nigerians are not lazy. People will call us lazy, but look at how young people are using 2k data to create opportunities. No job in the country, but people refuse to sit down and complain. They are using their phones as their shop, as their office. That resilience is powerful.
Second, it taught me that attention is the new currency. Before, you needed big capital to start business. Now, if you know how to hold people's attention for 60 seconds, you can sell anything. I saw a girl in my area who sells okrika (thrift wear) - she started doing try-on videos, and now people from Lagos, Port Harcourt are ordering from her. She never rented a shop.
Third, and the most important one - it taught me about pressure and comparison. Because everybody is posting their wins - "I made my first 100 dollars," "I bought my first car from TikTok money" - many people are now faking it. They rent clothes, borrow money to look successful online, just to belong to the trend. I almost fell for that pressure too.
So for me, this trend is both inspiring and dangerous. It is insppiring because it shoows that we can creaate our own opportunnities even when the systemm is hard. But it is dangerous if we start living for the camera and forget to build something real behind the camera.
I am genuinely invested in this trend because I am living it. I am not yet viraal, I don't have 10k folloowers, but I am learningg every day how to shoow up, how to write, how to be conssistent.
Maybe one daay, my own stoory will be the one that inspirees someone elsse.
