My back yard is not the best yard to build a garden in; there isn't much in the way of soil and there's a veritable shit-tonne of shade due to some really massive oak's. I am planning out building some raised garden beds to grow some shade veggies, but finishing a deck and patio are a priority.
Nonetheless, I do have a front yard with which I can do things. I will admit, it's not the most "normal" thing to do to build a garden in the front, but with some imagination I'm going to engage in some urban gardening.
This was Saturday's ingredients
I do have a few locations where I can easily dig into the ground to plant things, with this one being the most used; it's nestled in a corner, doesn't get much foot traffic, yet gets a decent amount of sunlight.
This is an ideal spot for a couple of tomato plants. I have another spot to put a bean plant, which will be good for the ground, but I didn't have a bean plant (at least not yet). But I do have tomato plants.
They're small right now, but they'll grow larger. I've got their cages set up for when that happens.
As part of the "urban gardening"/"front yard" gardening idea I'm wanting to use as much space as possible without being gawdy ugly; to that end, hanging fence planters and hanging planters are a good idea. There are some veggies that grow well in smallish containers, notably lettuce and, I'm hoping, some cauliflower and brocolli too. I've picked up some small plants that I'm hoping will grow.
brocolli
onions
lettuce
more lettuce
I have 12 more feet of planters to go which I am dedicated to various mints. I've ordered about 6 different types of mint from a local nonprofit, along with some lavendar, lemon grass, and other similar growing things to place in various spots along the fence and the yard. I have a new dehydrator that I'm really anxious to use with some mints for teas and possibly home made ice cream, so that can't happen soon enough.
Along with the veggies is some fruit; I have two English Hanging pots and one ground pot that now have strawberries planted in them:
I'm unsure of these. Strawberries like to spread; if it comes to the point that I need to transplant them into the ground, I will. I do have a spot on one side of hte fence they can live in, but I need to dig it up first.
I've also decided to try using cinder blocks. Really. Here is planted carrots and Dinosaur Kale. Really. There is such a thing. It's blue in colour and... dinosaur. How could I not? I will not be terribly disappointed if this particular experiment fails.
Finally, inside, in the tabletop greenhouse, I've planted some corn seeds. I would love to grow some corn. I think it'd be awesome to have a wall in front of the house by October. Crossing fingers!
yes, there are tiny baby corn in here under the UV lights
Oh, and potatoes! I have some above-ground potato growers. If that works, I have boys that will absolutely love home-made fries, right from the potato.
