I love the weekends. I'm going to be the first to admit that I have very selfish about them; enough time is spent working throughout the week that the weekend is a good time to play or, at least, to Get Out and Do Something. Working from home makes this doubly true. It can be detrimental to the point that when I should be working on keeping the house up, I've chosen instead to flee and do something selfish.

Compromises can be had. Saturday was busy at home, so Sunday was definitely not. My youngest son also expressed a desire to Get Out and Do Something, too; he's normally a home-body, so I definitely had to put something on the radar. We decided to go for a hike in the nearby Brandywine Creek State Park.

We chose a direction at random and were immediately met but a dark entrance with an ominous arrow, this way to meet your doom.

Every time I go out with the little guy I ask him if he wants to take a camera. Normally he politely declines and is just as happy to trot along chatting about whatever comes to mind, but this time he agreed to it. I was really quite thrilled by this. I saw him once looking purposefully into the camera settings and asked him if he needed a hand, or if there was something I could show him. "No thanks," he replied. "I'm just experimenting." Daww. He spent about the next hour taking photos of whatever caught his eye.

When we got home I did browse through his pictures and, indeed, what caught his eye was very different than what caught mine. I've asked him if I could share his photos; he declined, so all you'll get to see are mine.

It turns out that we were not the first to venture down this trail! Behold: the Markings of Those Who Came Before.

I have absolutely no idea who any of those people who owned those initial are, but I'm sure those trees know.

There are interesting things to photograph in the woods if one takes the opportunity to look around; there are interesting shapes and items everywhere.

This particular park also has these three foot tall stone walls running through it, a remnant of over a century ago with the DuPont family owned the land and had used it to raise cattle.

Given enough time, however, even the best made structures will ultimately return to the earth. Nature will reclaim all.

All told we walked over three miles, which really surprised me; I had expected the young lad to insist we turn back before we did. The creek was just around another bend, but he had enough and I wanted him to leave while still happy so he remembers being happy.

It was a good day.
