My name is Ahn Daewoong. I love Korean food, Korean music and Korean culture. I have been told numerous times that I am only supposed to marry a Korean woman. I usually only drink alcohol from Asian companies. I love Kimchi. My favorite city to visit is Seoul. I have a T-Money card to pay for taxi, bus and subway travel in Seoul in my wallet at all times. I keep Korean money with my passport. The CD in my car is of the artist BoA. And I tend to mainly associate with people who do Korean activities. With a name like Ahn Daewoong, you may find that to be normal. But there's one thing that's a little different about me than your average Korean male. What is it? It's the fact that I am a 6'4" Black man. How does this happen? How does a Black man get a Korean name? How has it changed my life? What do others think about me? It can be hard to explain to people, but basically I live my life the Waygookin way? What does that mean? Waygookin is the Korean word for a foreigner. I am a foreigner in Korean/Korean American culture because I am not actually Korean. But I am a foreigner in that the things that I do are considered typical of a Korean. For the past year, I have shared my story on my site, waygookinway.com, and on YouTube. As I continue on my journey, I will keep sharing my story with others, I continue to be asked questions concerning my life. While I may never answer things to everyone's satisfaction, I do my best to tell my untold tale of life as an outsider. A life that is lived The Waygookin Way.
