How I named my wife sweetness
I've never been very comfortable using cute pet names and terms of endearment. Saying things like "sweetie pie" or "snookums" just felt awkward and not like me. But I also wanted to have a special name for my wife that would let her know how much I cherish her. After some thought, I landed on calling her "Sweetness" and it's become very meaningful for our marriage.
In the early years together, I simply called my wife by her real name, imaobong. It never occurred to me to give her a nickname. I assumed she knew how special she was to me without needing a label. We were college sweethearts, so the relationship felt casual.
But once we got engaged, married and started building a life together, I wanted to show that I now saw Imaobong as my partner and best friend in a deeper way. I considered calling her the usual terms like "babe" or "honey" but it seemed impersonal.
Imaobong deserved something unique that captured her kind, compassionate spirit. Her gentle grace sweetens my days. She lifts my mood with her smile and inspires me to become my best self. Her caring ways sprinkle joy on even mundane moments.
After contemplating what words described my affection, calling Imaobong “Sweetness” clicked naturally. When I first uttered it looking into her eyes one evening, her touched expression said it all. This term felt like us.
Now I call Imaobong “Sweetness” every day - when we wake up, talk on the phone, reunite after work, cook together, and cuddle at night. It's my way of telling her the magic she brings to my life by just being herself. Saying it keeps me present and grateful for this incredible woman.
Sometimes if we’ve had a silly squabble, I’ll say “Sweetness, you know I adore you, right?” And hearing her nickname defuses any tension. Or when Imaobong is getting ready for a girls’ night out, I’ll say “Have fun Sweetness!” to remind her I'm always in her corner. It bonds us.
I hope as the years go by, calling my wife “Sweetness” will continue nurturing intimacy, laughter, and trust. Letting her know she's appreciated and admired each day through that simple term is my priority. I hit the jackpot with partners and want Imaobong to feel it.
So even though pet names don't come naturally to me, I'm glad I put thought into finding one special endearment for my wife. Spontaneously dubbing her “Sweetness” keeps our relationship fresh and sweet. And nothing could feel more natural than letting Imaobong, my one and only sweetness, know she's cherished
Using the pet name "Sweetness" has caught on with our family and friends too. Now Imaobong' parents will call out "How's my sweetness doing?" when we visit. And our nieces and nephews will say "Is Auntie Sweetness coming over today?"
Imaobong chuckles every time she hears our loved ones refer to her by my special nickname. It has organically become her identity across our whole extended family.
I also enjoy seeing Imaobong light up when I introduce her to new people as "my sweetness." It demonstrates publicly that I'm proud to have her by my side as my partner in life. Her beaming, blushing reactions lets everyone know how loved she feels.
Occasionally if we're out with a group and I refer to Imaobong as "Sweetness," a friend who is not familiar with the nickname will give us a confused look. We just laugh and explain it's a quirky term of endearment from me to Imaobong
Now I can not imagine calling Imaobong anything else. "Sweetness" embodies so much - not just her gentle kindness, but also our affection and the happy memories we continue making together. It represents new layers in our bond as the years go on.
I'm so glad I put thought into finding a pet name for my wife more meaningful than generic options. Settling on "Sweetness" was the perfect fit. It never fails to make Imaobong smile and feel appreciated. Using a heartfelt nickname specific to your special person is something I recommend to other husbands and partners. Finding that unique term of endearment deepens intimacy and connection, even through ups and downs, as your lives intertwine more fully.
