The emperor's new clothes.
It is the first thing I think about if I read today's prompt.
I never understood and never will understand how someone with normal common sense believes two, lazy guys who make an income with doing nothing.
I doubt these two are the first two scammers in history, but they are a great example of how scamming works.
Needed is a nose for the needs of someone. Stroke the ego and the person is willing to pay.
It is not difficult to do so. People hear what they like to hear. If you tell the truth they hate you, say you are jealous, too blind to see, etc.
Only a magic mirror can tell the truth because its role is to do so. It cannot lie and nobody expects it to be attentive.
The emperor loved clothes.
He also was a shopaholic and wanted to be and look special. We can assume he had no partner who looked upon him and he was a kind of neurotic with a lack of self-esteem.
He did not care about the country, the people, the only one he invested in, like a maniac, was himself.
The tailors knew exactly what to say and do to wrap the pathetic, for sure lonesome emperor around their finger.
They said what he liked to hear and the emperor ended nude in front of his people!
Did he feel ashamed?
I assume he partly did.
Did the tailors want to teach him a lesson?
Big chance that was their intention too.
The people laughed. Laughed at him in his face as soon as a child said a nudist walked around!
Why did the tale use a child? Because they say children (madmen and drunk) speak the truth and there was no mirror available!
What happened to the emperor?
You might think the emperor shamed himself, changed or even left.
Small chance. The emperor was jobless, used to luxury and he was the law.
For sure not everyone laughed. His guards and soldiers for example. Those who laughed and the tailors would probably get a bullet (or basket with rotten eggs and tomatoes and there were plenty of gallows. An emperor can only rule by the help of others and if he puts an example.
