Within the serene environment of Scholars International College, educator Bisola was teaching the concept of thermodynamics to the class.
"What is an adiabatic process?" she said.
Adebimpe, the daughter of a portal news broadcaster, answered.
"It is a process that does not involve the absorption or the release of heat energy to the surroundings."
Educator Bisola was impressed as she said to the class, "Class, a round of A plus." They immediately did so.
"Who can give an example of an adiabatic process that you know?"
Immediately, Lekan raised his hand.
"Scholar! Scholar!" some boys at the back started calling him that.
"Stop calling me that," Lekan said with his shy voice.
"Stop the noise and stop calling him that, or else—" Teacher Bisola gestured to the kids. "Speak, Lekan."
Lekan immediately spoke.
"The expansion of air as it reaches regions of lower atmospheric pressure should be one."
"Correct answer. Another one, guys."
Immediately, another student, Adeniran, said, "Ma, the formation of clouds cannot entirely be called an adiabatic process. I think it is only the expansion of gases that is due to adiabatic cooling."
"Absolutely, my dear. Adiabatic cooling is right."
Educator Bisola also mentioned examples such as the compression of the piston in a car engine, as well as tornadoes and hurricanes.
After the class, I noticed some students getting into a disagreement. Lekan and one of those boys at the back started throwing words at each other. Immediately, I shouted, "Cut the cord!"
I demanded they stop all forms of quarrel between them, which of course they did, and I re-oriented the class about bullying and its consequences.
Every one cooperated and bullying ended. That day, the class learned more than just thermodynamics. They learned that just as an adiabatic process involves no unnecessary exchange, we too must learn not to transfer our negativity onto others.
Knowledge is powerful, but character is even more so. Be kind, be respectful, and always remember that a great scholar is not only measured by what they know, but by how they treat others.
Until next time.
