Look Around The Cathedral Museum, Jakarta

When I arrived at the Cathedral Church complex, I had never thought that there was a Cathedral museum beside the Cathedral Church. The museum is located on the right side of the church, precisely right in front of the Mother Mary Prayer Garden. This museum is open on weekends at certain hours, so even if I am not worshiping, I can still visit this museum to improve your knowledge about the Cathedral church. For those of you who may be very far from Jakarta, let me take you on a virtual tour. I hope that with this post you can find out what you don't know through the museum's displays and collections.

The Cathedral Museum

This is the gate of the Cathedral Museum marked by the Cathedral Museum sign above the door. It is very interesting to see the architecture and concept of the entrance gate to this museum. The door is made of two layers, namely the first layer is made of wood, while the second layer is made of glass material so that even though the door is closed you can still see the inside. Maybe the purpose of these two layers of doors is to maintain the temperature inside.

When entering the main room you will see the museum looks like a regular house with a very large reception desk. On the left side there is a guest book, after filling in my name, I started walking around, starting from the poster of Rudolphus Kurris, SJ. He is a priest and founder of the Cathedral Museum Jakarta. Under the poster are placed his regalia and books that he wrote using an old typewriter on the table.

Then I moving to the room to the right of the receptionist, I found a room containing the names and biographies of the priests who have led services at the Cathedral Church since its founding. That is not a small number.

After exiting the priests' room, you will pass through a hallway containing the history of the Cathedral Museum during its early construction, then enter the room on the right and find a collection of old bicycles, rocking chairs, and old suitcases used by the predecessors in spreading the Catholic religion. On each wall there is also information about how the three collections played a role in spreading the Catholic religion.

P. Bonnike Pastor's Boat

This is a replica of the event of the death of Father P Bonnike on a boat while sailing in the Lowotobi Strait. Father P Bonnike was a priest from the Cathedral Church whose struggle in spreading the Catholic religion in Indonesia was very meritorious.

Marriage Record's Book

This is the Ancient Book containing Marriage Records that took place at the Jakarta Cathedral Church since its founding in 1901.

The Replica of Cathedral Chruch

One of them is a replica of the Cathedral Church made from newspaper that is rolled as small as possible and glued before finally being formed into a complete Cathedral Church. Making a Replica using newspaper is certainly a way to reduce waste and show that newspaper can be a beautiful work.

This replica name is Lapastik Bangli.

In the room to the left of Lapastik Bangli there is a collection used in performances during worship (correct me if I'm wrong).

The Mother Mary in Kebaya

This is the most unique collection, where there is a statue of the Virgin Mary wearing traditional Indonesian women's clothing, namely kebaya. Isn't it beautiful?

Visiting the Cathedral Museum brought me a little knowledge about Catholicism. A simple example is that I learned that there are different functions between robes in service. I also learned that each priest has a different specialty. This is an interesting experience to learn about some events during the spread of Catholicism in the past.
