Some people take reading for granted, perhaps because they don't like to do it or simply because they have too many things to do every day, and reading is not one of the priorities. But, if we take into account the importance it has in our lives, it is very likely that we will be more determined to include this activity in our daily routine.

A few days ago I was watching a video posted by fermionico@fermionico, who is a highly experienced curator on the Hive platform. Within the recommendations he highlighted the importance of reading 1 or 2 hours per day. In this particular case he suggested it to improve the way we express ourselves, especially in written language.

It is undoubtedly an accurate recommendation, not only because he said it, but also because, modesty aside, I am one of the people who have followed this recommendation since I was very young. That has allowed me to express myself in the written language in an accurate way. Of course, I am still learning, so I will never say that I do not make mistakes.

This suggestion was also aimed at improving the use of punctuation marks, which in turn facilitates the understanding of those who read our publication, and that is exactly what we most want!

In this post I do not intend to contradict the suggestion expressed in that video. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I mention it because, in addition to reading daily, it is of great importance to do it in the right way. And it is towards that point that my publication is focused.

Taking into account the importance of reading regularly, and doing it properly, I am going to mention some practical suggestions to do it well. One of them is that, whether we read just to ourselves, we should always read aloud.

Also, something that has helped me improve my reading is to imagine that it is an essay to present to an audience later. That can help us read with a purpose, which in turn will encourage us to do it with more enthusiasm and always with the desire to improve. Let's look at 3 suggestions.

N° 1. Know the meaning of the words

When we read a paragraph that includes words we do not know, perhaps because they are rarely used or simply because we had not heard or seen them before, we could falter in reading, which would negatively influence its understanding. Even if we read it with the appropriate speed, because we do not know what it means, it is likely that we will not understand the writing.

Hence the importance of knowing what each of the words we are going to read means. Decades ago, we could only turn to a more experienced friend or, if we had one, we could only look in a dictionary. But, with the advent of the internet, we have many more tools that allow us to know both the correct pronunciation and the meaning of each expression.

So all that's left is to do a little research. And once we know what it is, it is important that we include it in our vocabulary and use it whenever it is convenient.

N° 2. Let's read ideas, not just words

Good reading doesn't just involve pronouncing each word correctly, it also requires that the idea of the text is conveyed. One of the best ways to achieve this is by linking several words together, rather than reading one word at a time. Of course, in order to know what the idea of the writing is, good preparation is necessary. This means that the text will have to be read several times and always aloud.

Furthermore, if we only read words separately, we may at some point change the meaning of the sentence or, even worse, the whole paragraph. we must always keep in mind that if we who are reading do not understand the information, it is very unlikely, if not impossible, that the audience will understand anything.

N° 3. Read with the right feeling

In spoken language it is very easy to express emotions. For example, when we give bad news, our voice reflects sadness or regret. But, when we give positive news, the feeling is one of joy, which is why we tend to raise our voice a little. Similarly, when we read a text written by someone else, we must know the nuances of the text.

This is even more important when the text has dialogues within it. In these cases, we must know the context of the story, as well as the emotion of the character at the moment of his or her intervention. Something that can help us a lot are punctuation marks, such as exclamation marks, for example.

But, in case these are not present, then we can be guided by the context of the situation. Depending on the emotion to be expressed, we can raise or lower our voice a little, change the tone to low or high-pitched, or simply speak faster or slower. This point is also influenced by good preparation. It is not enough just to read, we must transmit what the writer of the text we are reading feels, thinks and wishes. Otherwise, our reading will be boring and monotonous.

On this last recommendation, it is necessary not to exaggerate, to avoid that the reading becomes a dramatic representation, unless you are looking for that objective.

These are only 3 of the suggestions that can help us improve our daily reading. If we take them into account, then we will be able to enjoy it, as well as achieve a considerable improvement in our communication skills.
