We’re kicking off September with a new topic: those TV ads or commercials that became iconic and truly memorable. A big thanks to avdesing@avdesing for such great ideas. There are several commercials I’d like to talk about and share my experiences with you, because it’s true that these ads can embed themselves so deeply in your psyche—either stirring up nostalgia by defining an era you were fond of, or simply becoming indelible classics that stand the test of time.

The first one I’m going to share with you dates back to 1988 and is for the toilet cleaner "MAS." It’s worth noting that in Venezuela, we call the fixture a *poceta*, whereas in other countries it’s known as an *inodoro*, *excusado*, *báter*, or *W.C.* Anyway, this commercial became so successful that everyone memorized it and would even recite it line by line. In the ad, we see a toilet "talking" about the properties of the product being sold; the commercial endured over the years using the exact same lines, with the only change being the appearance of the bathroom—it was updated, so to speak, to match the era in which it aired. I’ll leave you the link to the commercial that came out in 1988 and another one from 2002.

This happened again with another brand, PlumRose—a ham brand. In 1986, they released a Christmas commercial that became absolutely memorable; people would eagerly await it as December approached. It featured a young girl arriving at a deli to ask for Plumrose ham—specifically the "planchado" (pressed) ham commonly eaten in Venezuela during the holidays, as it is an essential ingredient in our traditional *pan de jamón* (ham bread). When the girl asked for the product, the clerk apprehensively told her he had sold out and couldn't fulfill her request. She went home sad, but right in the middle of Christmas dinner, the man appeared at her house with a box of ham. The brand's marketing team was very clever in 2002; much like the brand behind the previous commercial, they tapped into nostalgia by updating the ad without losing its essence. They even included the original protagonist—the girl—now as an adult recounting the story to her daughter, who was roughly the same age the mother had been back then.

Another one I remember with special fondness is the commercial for a prestigious Caracas restaurant called La Estancia. But first, let me provide some context so you understand why I hold it in such high regard: I have always been bothered by excessively loud commercials—the kind where people shout or feature songs with catchy yet ear-splitting lyrics. This commercial broke the mold of the standard fare usually seen on TV channels, making it feel incredibly relaxing to me. I vividly recall coming home from work at midday for lunch; while my wife and daughters watched their soap operas, this commercial would always air. It ran for many years featuring the same song lyrics, so it became deeply etched in the memories and hearts of all Venezuelans.

Well, those are the commercials I decided to include in this post; later on, I’ll share others that I also remember fondly because they defined an era—and that’s why they’ll always stay with me.
