This is my contribution to the Memorable TV Ads – September’s Topic on YouHive initiative Link.
Over the years, I’ve seen how commercials have changed in terms of language and the way content is presented. However, the themes featured in commercials remain the same. Humanity’s aspirations and desires—whether lofty or mundane—don’t seem to have changed over time.
The first video I’m sharing is from Spanish public television. It’s a compilation of commercials made for television titled: The Commercials of My Life: Melodies We Can’t Forget.
I get the impression that some of them are simply advertising campaigns originally designed for radio and later adapted for television. That explains the prominence of catchy melodies and rhymes.
If the goal of advertising is for us to remember the product being promoted, there’s no doubt that these commercials were a huge success.
In addition to the compilation from Spanish public television, I’ve included the 1972 commercial for Famosa dolls. That ad featured a Christmas carol that became so popular it became part of the Christmas carol repertoire and the collective imagination of several generations of Spaniards.
Over the years, television advertising has become increasingly visual and less audio-based, though it has not lost its essence. A brand or product is presented and associated with people, memories, emotions, desires, or aspirations.
For example, a popular yogurt brand in Spain advertised a dairy product that lacked the supposed properties mentioned by a well-known Spanish actor. Although it lacked the advertised properties, José Coronado’s presence undoubtedly lent his prestige and reliability to the small plastic container, whose contents were of dubious value.
As I was saying, over the years, television advertising has become more visual, and at times—such as during Christmas—the quality of the commercials was often higher than that of the television programs they interrupted.
Freixenet
For years, the Freixenet commercial was one of the most eagerly anticipated TV commercials during the Christmas season—a commercial that millions and millions of Spaniards looked forward to and discussed afterward.
There may be two explanations for this social phenomenon. The first is that, until 1990, I believe, Spanish public television held a monopoly on television broadcasts. Without competition from other networks, unique audience phenomena emerged, such as the game show 1-2-3.
One of the factors behind the enormous success of the Freixenet commercial in the 1970s and 1980s may therefore have been due to that public monopoly. However, this alone does not fully explain it; the Freixenet commercials were, in fact, high-quality short films.
Freixenet presented two commercials: one of them unforgettable—the one starring Bárbara Rey (1980)—and the one from 2015. I must admit that even as a child, watching Bárbara Rey surrounded by little bubbles left me spellbound… By 2015, the brand’s portrayal of women had already changed. The women chosen by Freixenet are members of the National Rhythmic Gymnastics Team because they embody three values: talent, hard work, and the pursuit of excellence.
So advertisements don’t just promote products or brands… they also reflect how a society sees itself or what it aspires to be.
From El Almendro, I’m presenting two commercials from two different eras. I don’t think anyone would dispute that Christmas, in addition to being a time of hope, is also a time when partings and reunions are experienced with particular emotion. The brand plays on this.
The Almendro arrives for Christmas, just as those children who had to travel far from their families in search of work or education return. A few years ago, the train took center stage; millions of young people had migrated from Spain’s small towns to the city. Then came the airplane; society was changing, but what didn’t change—and still doesn’t—is the excitement of these reunions.
Although none of the Lottery’s Christmas commercials made much of an impression on me when I was a kid—I don’t even remember if they existed—one had to be included in this post. They are genuine, beautifully crafted short films that touch our hearts by focusing on fundamental themes such as hope, family, tenderness, friendship, optimism, and a sense of belonging...
El juguete que no tuve // The toy I didn't have
I couldn't leave out the toy I never had; like other toys I liked as a child, this one never made it to my home. In this case, it seems the kid in the commercial had all the Geypermans.
Regalo // Gift
¡Fundador!
Está como nunca,
porque es seco y es suave.
¡Fundador!

Advertising isn’t just found behind screens; we’re surrounded by advertising messages—wherever we look, we’ll find some kind of invitation to buy something.
Among all the possible forms of advertising, I’d like to highlight a promotion in EP format (a small vinyl record with four tracks) from Fundador. It was a free record you received with the purchase of Fundador Brandy, and in addition to the four popular songs, it included a jingle that went something like this:
It’s better than ever,
the cognac that tastes best.
Fundador!
It’s better than ever,
because it’s dry and smooth.
Fundador!
