For several months, photographer Richard Avedon’s (1923–2004) project “The American West” was on display at the Mapfre Foundation headquarters in Madrid. The exhibition presented, for the first time in Europe, the complete series from this project since its debut in the United States (1985).

I think this is the exhibition that, right off the bat, made me feel the most aversion as soon as I came face-to-face with the first works. I’d say it was “hatred” at first sight.

Among many similar images in that space was a portrait of a man wearing a “white” apron and T-shirt, soaked in what appears to be blood. His face looks straight ahead with a weary, almost expressionless gaze. A black-and-white portrait set against a white background.

There is no context, no workplace—just an empty background. This style of portraiture, bordering on expressionism, rather than evoking the inner world of the subject—perhaps his anguish or anger—actually provoked a strong sense of unease in me.

In that portrait, as in the rest of the series, I could only see the image of a zoo. Hundreds of specimens stolen from their habitats, displayed like animals in nearly life-size form and clearly labeled:

  • Juan Patricio Lobato, butcher, Rocky Ford, Colorado (1980)

  • David Breason: shipping clerk, Denver, Colorado (1981)

  • Sandra Bennett, age 12, Rocky Ford, Colorado (1980)

  • (...)

  • Juan Patricio Lobato, carnicero, Rocky Ford, Colorado (1980)
  • David Breason: empleado de transporte marítimo, Denver, Colorado, (1981)
  • Sandra Bennett, de 12 años de edad, Rocky Ford, Colorado, (1980)
  • (...)

I’m lucky enough to share many of the exhibitions with my friend soho1958@soho1958—at least the photography ones. He’s one of the most knowledgeable people I know when it comes to film and photography, and he’s also an exceptional photographer Link. As I was saying, I’m lucky because his knowledge adds so much context to an exhibition.

During our visit to this project, he told me about another photographer who was a contemporary of Avedon. An artist whose impression of this project was similar to mine (there are no original ideas).

This photographer is Larry Clark (1943) Link. Basically, Larry Clark said that Avedon is mocking the people he photographs.

Clark, in particular, is a voice worth listening to, since his work also reflects that world that few outsiders want to see. I’m referring to the harshest social environments.

I didn’t need to read Larry Clark thoroughly to understand his rejection of Avedon’s “The American West.” For Clark, this collection of wrinkles and weary glances is horrible “because if you look at those photos, they’re the most unflattering images of people.”

I think this point is important; I can’t imagine Avedon treating his runway models the same way—shattering an ideal by photographing them just after waking up in the morning and without makeup, or in the wee hours of the morning at a wild party, drunk out of their minds.

Even so, I’ve been reflecting on this exhibition and this project for some time now, trying to understand the concept behind it.

I’ve read Avedon—that is, I’ve tried to hear the defendant’s side—and although this hasn’t changed the extent to which this project stirs my emotions, the tension is different now.

Finally, a quote from Avedon himself, featured in the Mapfre exhibition, opened the door for me to see this hidden America in a new light.

My subjects are those people whom no one looks at. But they are the ones who make the world go round. They do the work. Avedon

Avedon

It could be that the charm lies precisely in this lack of context. It is this absence that gives us the opportunity to act as anthropologists. Those faces, those gazes, become symbols to be deciphered.

This “zoo” without context—precisely because it is devoid of references—compels us to imagine the story behind each subject. The life that sculpted those gazes or carved those deep wrinkles. Lives that at times seem to have been run over by an invisible yet gigantic steamroller.

IMG_20260720_155113.jpg

The absence of a specific “setting” ensures that these stories remain timeless. I have no doubt that if a similar project were repeated today, the faces portrayed would once again speak to us of similar lives in far too many parts of this planet.

The tension remains; I no longer feel outright rejection of the work, but rather the tension between the two perspectives that now coexist within me. I still feel a certain degree of rejection, which at this moment coexists with a certain understanding of the idea behind this project.

In any case, I agree with soho1959@soho1959 that it was a great exhibition, one that will surely continue to tour Europe.
