Today I want to share a terrifying experience we had last week—and it didn't even happen in our own home (God forbid!), but at the house next door. Last week, I heard my wife calling me, sounding somewhat alarmed; when I came out of the room, she said, "Look what Mr. Tino brought over" (referring to our neighbor). It was a huge snake—well, at least it seemed huge to me; I’ve seen wild snakes before, but never one that big. As it turned out, our neighbor’s daughter had discovered it right behind the refrigerator. Since she has a very young child, our neighbor had no choice but to deal with the snake—meaning he had to kill it—for the safety of the family, and especially for the sake of the child.
Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes una experiencia aterradora que vivimos la semana pasada, y eso que no fue en nuestra casa (¡Dios no lo permita!) fue en la casa de al lado. La semana pasada yo escucho a mi esposa llamándome un tanto alarmada y cuando salí de la habitación ella me dijo "¡Mira lo que trajo el señor Tino" (refiriéndose al vecino) se trataba de una enorme serpiente, bueno, al menos para mí lo era pues yo he visto serpientes silvestres antes pero nunca una tan grande. El caso es que la hija de nuestro vecino la descubrió justo detrás de la nevera y ella tiene un niño muy pequeño, así que nuestro vecino no tuvo más remedio que lidiar con dicha serpiente, es decir, tuvo que matarla por la seguridad de la familia y en especial por el niño.
I fully understand that this might seem cruel—especially to nature lovers or animal rights activists—but the entire context must be considered. Obviously, the right thing to do would be to call the relevant authorities or the fire department, but that can consume too much valuable time; often, the appropriate agencies don't even show up or fail to answer, and anything could happen in the meantime. Consequently, there is no choice but to rely on survival instinct.
Yo entiendo perfectamente que esto puede parecer cruel, en especial para los amantes de la naturaleza o los activistas que luchan por los derechos de los animales, pero también hay que estudiar y analizar el contexto completo. Obviamente lo correcto sería llamar a las autoridades pertinentes o a los bomberos, pero esto puede tomar demasiado tiempo valioso, muchas veces los organismos pertinentes ni siquiera llegan o no te contestan, y mientras eso ocurre puede pasar cualquier cosa, entonces no hay más remedio que activar el instinto de supervivencia.
These are screenshots from a video my daughter took when the neighbor came over to show us the animal; they caught our attention because they clearly show just how long the snake was. At first, our biggest concern was whether or not it was venomous, so we ran the photos through an AI app my wife has on her phone. It confirmed that the snake was non-venomous—specifically a Rainbow Boa (or Colombian Boa), a type of constrictor. Even so, it could still be dangerous for children or pets, as a bite could lead to infection. Naturally, this discovery made us wonder how it had gotten there, with the most terrifying possibilities being the drains or the toilet.
Estas son capturas de pantalla de un video que mi hija realizó cuando el vecino vino a mostrarnos al animal, nos llamó la atención porque allí se ve cuan larga era la serpiente. En un principio la preocupación más alarmante era saber si era venenosa o no, así que usando esas fotografías las metimos a una aplicación de IA que tiene mi esposa en el teléfono y allí nos confirmó que no era venenosa, se trataba de una Boa arcoiris o Boa colombiana, osea una serpiente constrictora n venenosa, pero aún así puede ser peligrosa para niños o animales pues su mordedura podría transmitir infecciones. Y obviamente este hallazgo nos puso a pensar en la idea de como llegó allí, siendo la respuesta más aterradora, los desagües o la poceta (el indoro)
My neighbor and I immediately set about clearing out the yard on our own, getting rid of scrap, plants, and other items we didn't really need or that were just taking up space; yet, we couldn't shake the thought that the animal likely got in through the pipes—a truly terrifying prospect. Tanto mi vecino como yo enseguida nos dedicamos cada uno por su parte a despejar el patio, deshaciéndonos de chatarras, plantas y otras cosas que realmente n necesitáramos o estuviesen de más, pero aún así no dejamos de pensar que probablemente ese animal haya llegado allí a través de las tuberías, lo que nos resulta aterrador ¿Ustedes qué opinan? y ¿Qué hubiesen hecho de haber estado en el lugar del vecino?
