Today, it is time to analyze this gem by the Brothers Grimm: "The Three Snake-Leaves."
Hoy es el turno de analizar esta joya de los hermanos Grimm, Las Tres Hojas de la Serpiente.
Many years ago, there was a king who had a daughter—exceedingly beautiful, yet capricious. Her greatest whim was that, should she die first, her husband must agree to be buried alongside her; this demand had scared off most of her suitors. However, a young peasant—who had left home so as not to be a burden to his parents—fell so deeply in love with the princess, and was so dazzled by her beauty, that he accepted the challenge; thus, the two were married with the king's blessing. For a time, the couple was immensely happy, until one day the princess fell gravely ill and died. Consequently, he had to allow himself to be buried in the crypt with his deceased wife.
Hace muchos años había un rey que tenía una hija muy pero muy hermosa anque caprichosa, su mayor capricho era que si moría primero u marido debía hacerse enterrar junto a ella, y este capricho había ahuyentado a la mayoría de sus pretendientes, sin embargo un joven campesino que se había ido de su casa para ya no ser una carga para sus padres, se enamoró tanto de la princesa, se dejó deslumbrar tanto por su belleza que aceptó el reto, así que ambos se casaron con la bendiión del rey. Por un tiempo la pareja fue inmensamente feliz, hasta ue en una ocasión la princesa enfermó de gravedad y murió, Por lo tanto tuvo que dejarse enterrar en la cripta con su esposa muerta.
While there with only three loaves of bread and three bottles of wine, he was forced to ration his supplies; however, at one point he saw a white snake approaching the corpse. To prevent it from getting any closer, the young man drew his sword and cut the animal into three pieces. Shortly thereafter, he saw another snake emerge from a hole carrying three leaves in its mouth; it placed them over the wounds of the first snake, restoring it to life. He then took the leaves and placed them on his dead wife's eyes and mouth, and she came back to life.
Estando allí con tan solo tres hogazas de pan y tres botellas de vino se vio obligado a racionar sus recursos pero en algún momento vio a una serpiente blanca acercarse al cadáver, entonces para evitar que se acercara completamente, el joven sacó una espada y cortó al animal en tres secciones, pero al cabo de un rato vio que otra serpiente salió de un hueco con tres hojas en la boca, las cuales ubicó encima de las heridas de la otra serpiente y con esto quedó restituída, así qu él tomó las hojas y las ubicó en los ojos y la boca de su mujer muerta y ella recobró la vida.
The young man asked his servant to keep the three leaves safe for him. Over time, the princess grew cold and wicked and no longer loved her husband; indeed, during a voyage across the open sea, she fell in love with a sailor, and together they plotted to throw her husband overboard to drown. However, the servant took a boat to search for his master and brought him back to life using the three serpent leaves; they then rowed back to the palace and told the king what had happened, whereupon he took action against his daughter and the sailor by forcing them to set sail in a ship riddled with holes.
El joven le pidió a su sirviente que guardara las tres hojas por él. Con el tiempo la princesa se volvió fría y malvada y ya no amaba a su marido, inluso, en un viaje que hicieron por altamar se enamoró del marino y con él planearon arrojó a su marido por la borda para que muriera ahogado, sin embargo, el sirviente abordó un bote y se fue en busca de su señor, volviéndolo a la vida usando las tres hojas de la serpiente, luego remaron juntos de vuelta al palacio y contaron lo ocurrido al rey, el cuál tomó medidas contra su hija y el marino, haciéndolos embarcar una nave agujereada.
There is a stark contrast between the princess's selfishness and capricious nature and the young man's selfless loyalty; he acted nobly from the very beginning, leaving home so as not to be a burden to his father, then acceding to the princess's request and facing death for her sake by allowing himself to be entombed alive—even restoring her to life. Yet, she proved that her nature would always be capricious, for she soon set her sights on the sailor, indifferent to the sacrifice her husband had made for her; fortunately, however, the king proved to be just.
Hay un marcado contraste entre el egoismo y naturaleza capichosa de la princesa y la lealtad desinteresada del joven, él actuó con nobleza desde el inicio cuando se fue de su hogar para ya no ser una carga para su padre, luego aceptó la petición de la princesa, se entregó a la muerte por ella al dejarse encerrar vivo en esa crpta e incluso le devolvió la vida, pero ella demostró que su naturaleza siempre sería caprichosa, pués luego puso sus ojos en el marino y no le importó el sacrificio que su esposo hizo por ella, no obstante afortunadamente el rey demostró ser justo.
Loyalty is also demonstrated by the actions of the young man's faithful servant, who saved his life using the three snake leaves; yet best of all, the Brothers Grimm teach us that wrongdoing is punished through their characteristic poetic justice, in which villains receive exemplary—and often quite cruel—punishment, though this cruelty is proportionate to their own vile deeds.
La lealtad también queda demostrada con la acción del fiel siervo del muchacho, el cual le salvó la vida también usando las tres hojas de la serpiente, pero lo mejor de todo es que los hermanos Grimm nos dan una lección de que los malos actos son castigados a través de su acostumbrada justicia poética, donde los villanos reciben un castigo ejemplar y muchas veces bastante cruel, aunque esta crueldad es proporcional con sus propios actos viles
Another striking aspect of this tale is that the hero does not have to undergo countless trials to win the princess and the throne—he secures them almost from the start—because the true test lies in being married to someone so capricious, cruel, and vile. Furthermore, the story opens by highlighting the theme of family separation caused by poverty and hunger—much like in other tales by the Brothers Grimm—reflecting an issue that was commonplace in Europe during that era.
Otra cosa que llama la atención es que en este cuento el héroe no tiene que pasar por miles de peripecias para acceder a la princesa y al trono, sino que casi desde un inicio lo obtiene, pero se debe a que la verdadera prueba sería el hecho de estar casado con alguien tan caprichoso, cruel y vil. Por otra parte al inicio sale a relucir el tema de la separación familiar a causa de la pobreza y el hambra, tal como en otras historias de los Hermanos Grimm, ya que era un tema que estaba a la orden del día por aquellos añpos en Europa.
