Kimberly's first job
Kimberly had just graduated from high school and with her good GPA, she was awarded a full scholarship to law school. Classes were starting in three months so, instead of going on vacation, she decided to work. She had always wanted to be an adult, so she was excited to take that step. While she was on her laptop checking job sites, the house phone rang:
-Kim, Gloria called, she told me that if you want you can take the call center position at her company. The girl who used to work there quit today. -Her mother said to her from the living room.
-Of course I'm going to want that job, Mom! I'm going to call her right now. -She answered and went straight to the phone.
Kimberly was so excited to start working that she barely slept on Sunday. When she woke up the next day she had a smile from ear to ear, showered, dressed and went downstairs for breakfast. Her mom was already sitting at the table waiting for her, she had made arepas with cheese and was serving the juice.
While they were eating, her mother told her a little about her friend Gloria's company. She told her that they sold skin care products and that, at the moment, they were all working in a rented house they had converted into offices.
-Gloria is not amused, she says they are cramped for space. But she has to make do with that until she gets something better. You'll love it, the atmosphere is great and the pay is good. She's doing better and better in her business.
-Her mother commented with a smile.

They continued talking until they finished eating. Kim washed her plate, finished getting ready and left for her first job. She only had to take a bus, which was quite convenient, the place was not far away. She rang the doorbell and the door was opened for her, at the reception desk was a woman in her forties who smiled and said good morning. She motioned for him to follow her, and as he asked her questions, she showed him around the company and explained everything.
-You must be Kimberly Suarez, right?
-That's right, today is my first day as a call center. I spoke with Mrs. Gloria on Friday.
-Yes, she informed me. As it is urgent for you to start, we are going to train you as we go along, I hope it won't be too hard for you. Do you speak English?
-Yes, I speak English.
-Perfect, Kimberly. Here's a catalog with our products so you can get familiar with them....
A month went by and everything went well, she had no problems adapting and followed the rhythm of the work perfectly. Gloria was satisfied with her new employee, Kimberly met all the objectives and knew how to work under pressure. After a few weeks another call center came in, so the work would be less of a chore for Kim, but not as pleasant.
Since space in the house was tight, the new employee was placed in Kimberly's position.
Not surprisingly, Kim was no longer as comfortable, her new position was quite far away from her other coworkers, and it was also the dimmest place in the house. A few feet away from her was a door that was locked, that door was the division between that part of the house and the other.

-Dijo ella, hosca.
Gloria had explained to her on her first day of work that the house was even bigger, only that the owners did not rent the whole house, only half of it where they were now. Kim didn't have to ask her why the owners had made that decision; she would figure it out for herself as the days went by.
From the first week of the move, she had trouble concentrating at work, there was too much noise behind that door, distant conversations, laughter, children playing and running around on the other side... sometimes these children would knock on her door. They drove her crazy.
One day at lunchtime, she unburdened herself to Maritza, one of the salesgirls:
-You don't know how upset I am... I have no problem with the new call center, but I really don't understand why they had to move me. They should have put her here, it was the logical thing to do, I started working first. -She said, sullenly.
-Wow, in all the time you've been here I've never seen you so grumpy, but what is it about this place that makes you uncomfortable? I'd rather like to have that position because it's farther away from the noise of everyone, hahaha. -Maritza answered.
-More away from the noise, are you kidding me! The people next door won't leave me alone, I swear those kids are getting on my nerves. What's on the other side?
-Really? children? I thought there was no one on the other side of the house, I really have no idea, ask Gloria. You were unlucky then.
-You don't say...
Time went on and Kimberly became more and more stressed. It made her desperate to see them all working so quietly while she had to deal with the noise. One day something happened that startled her at her desk, instead of the usual laughter and games, she began to hear piercing screams, glass breaking, heavy objects falling, children crying and a pungent smell of burning....

-¿Hola, hay alguien allí? ¿Me oyen?
-Contestó Kimberly y aterrada llamó a emergencias.
-Hello, is anybody there? Can you hear me? Please help us, everything is burning, we can't get out, HELP! THE CHILDREN, THERE ARE STILL CHILDREN! -Shouted a woman's voice attached to the door on the other side.
-Yes, I'm going to call for help, calm down!
-Kimberly answered and, terrified, called 911. As soon as she finished giving the address, she ran over and shouted to everyone that the house was on fire on the other side and that people were trapped.
The office staff panicked, except for the cleaning man who stared at her in surprise. They quickly left the house and waited in the street. Gloria was not at the company that day, so Maritza took it upon herself to inform her of what was happening.
In less than five minutes the firemen arrived. When they asked where the fire was, Kimberly explained and informed them that there were children trapped in the place. They rushed in and the cleaning man, who had been quiet up to that point, came up behind them:
-Wait! -He said, trying to stop them.
-Sir, it is dangerous. Please, stay out here, we'll take care of it.
-The fireman replied.
Jonás, the cleaning man, clicked his tongue and remained calm. Kimberly could not believe his attitude, everyone was worried but him.

Gloria arrived at that instant, parked the car anyway and got out. Her face was pale with fright. Then they explained to her what had happened and that everyone should wait there. Fifteen minutes later, the firemen appeared at the door and came out in single file, looking as if they were unfriendly.
-What happened to the children?
-Kimberly hurried to say.
-Miss, we've been played a pretty bad joke. We are not here to waste time like that. Nothing is happening there, we opened the door you indicated to see where the fire was and we only found an empty house. There is no one there, there is no fire either. We checked everything.
-What do you mean there is no one there? Since my place of work is near that damn door I've heard them all the time. Children and adults. Of course there are people there!
The firemen looked at her as if she was crazy and told her again that there was no one there. They told her to go inside with them so she could check for herself. Kimberly couldn't believe what they were telling her, so she reluctantly went inside and when they arrived at her work station, she was surprised to see the door that divided the two houses, open. She had grown accustomed to seeing it eternally closed.
He was even more surprised to see how dark it looked, it didn't look like a house but like a tunnel. One of the firemen passed in front of her and waved for her to go in with him. She did as he told her and saw that on the other side was a house with several huge rooms, and a staircase leading to a floor below. This side was noticeably larger and it was noticeable that no one had been there in quite a while. Everything looked abandoned.
It was evident that many years ago, the entire house had been a school. The way everything was laid out made it evident: the size of the doors, the windows, the wide hallways... Kimberly said no more and walked out. She started to get dizzy, she had had a lot of emotional stress in a short time. She sat down at her desk and put her hands on her head.

-Miss, are you all right? -asked the fireman.
-Yes, I'm fine. I'm sorry for my call, I guess I made a mistake, it's the stress of work that has me like this. It wasn't my intention to bother you or play a joke on you, I'm really sorry....
After what happened, Kimberly decided to quit. She could no longer stand there and see Gloria and the employees looking at her as if she had a problem. A few weeks later, when she had already started college, she ran into Mr. Jonás. She was sure he knew something about that house, he had been the only one who kept calm the day she called 911.
After insisting for a while, he gave in and told her the truth:
Three decades ago the house was a school, one of the best in the area. I had not been working there long, I was twenty years old at the time. One day there was a fire on the upper floor and they couldn't get them all out. Fifteen children and a teacher died, precisely where you heard the noises.
Jonas rolled up the sleeve of his left hand and showed her a burn on his forearm.
