Psychophony: Channels from the Beyond
The recorder on the table read 3:03 a.m. Halloween night enveloped the old colonial house in a deathly silence, barely interrupted by the constant patter of rain.
Katia and Jonathan, two fairly skeptical paranormal investigators who were nevertheless obsessed with science, adjusted their headphones and prepared the rest of their equipment to record some kind of extrasensory activity.
They had spent an entire week trying to uncover the truth behind Hispano-America’s most deeply rooted legend: La Llorona, the Weeping Woman. They wanted to prove that the famous nighttime EVP recordings were actually electromagnetic interference and misinterpreted environmental noises.
“All right, let’s filter out the static from channel three,” Katia said, typing hurriedly on her laptop.
Jonathan nodded, rubbing his tired eyes.
“If there’s anything there, the audio isolation algorithms will pick it up. I’ve meticulously measured every corner of this house; there are no drafts or unusual vibrations. Everything is under control.”
They hit play on the file recorded at midnight, right in front of the old dry well in the house’s garden. At first, all they could hear was the microphone’s static hiss. But ten seconds in, the audio spectrum on the screen displayed an abrupt spike that rose and fell violently.
A simple interference did not come from the speakers. Instead, a chilling, heart-wrenching scream erupted from them, freezing the blood in both investigators’ veins. It was a high-pitched, shrill woman’s scream, followed by unintelligible wails. It was not a cry of physical pain, but of an emotional and visceral suffering that seemed to come from the depths of her soul.
Jonathan felt a shiver run down his spine, though he tried to maintain his professional composure.
“Impressive! That’s a very convincing frequency modulation. Someone must have played an audio file near the sensor to pull a nasty prank on us.”
“A prank?” Katia replied, her voice trembling with confusion as she pointed at the screen. “Jonathan, look at the waveform. It’s not coming from outside. The sound was recorded through the recorder’s internal channel, as if it had resonated directly inside the microphone. And there’s more.”
Katia enlarged the waveform from the seconds following the scream. A nearly imperceptible murmur, buried beneath the wails, repeated some names over and over.
They looked at each other.
They turned the volume all the way up.
—Katia... Jonathan...
Katia’s heart lurched so violently that she felt like vomiting. The voice was not merely whispering; it sounded terrifyingly close, as if it were speaking from behind them… as if it were inside the same room.
Both of them instinctively turned to look around, but there was no one else there. For the first time since they had entered the house, neither of them could find a scientific explanation for what had just happened.
Jonathan shot to his feet, his brow furrowed with anger and growing panic.
“That’s enough. This is a setup. I’m going to check the perimeter. I’m sure someone broke into the house and is probably laughing at us.”
He walked toward the study’s main door to turn on the hallway lights. He turned the doorknob, but the door would not budge. It was sealed shut with unnatural force, as if tons of earth were pressing against it from the other side.
“That’s strange…”
Jonathan tried again, this time pulling with all his strength. But it didn’t work. He stood there staring at the door in disbelief.
“What’s happening?” Katia asked from the computer.
Then they heard dripping, as if someone had left a faucet slightly open. What was strange was how loud and close it sounded… they both knew the only working bathroom was quite far from where they were.
They both froze.
Ploc.
The sound was coming from the hallway.
Ploc.
Now it sounded as though it were right in front of the door.
Ploc. Ploc. Ploc. Ploc. Ploc. Ploc. Ploc. Ploc.
Jonathan stepped backward and bumped into Katia, who had gotten up from her chair. Both of them were pale with fear.
The recorder turned on by itself again. Neither of them had touched it. The recording indicator began flashing bright red. Instead of a scream, a terrible, deafening sobbing filled the room, but it was not coming from the speakers. It was coming from the hallway behind the sealed door, dragging heavily across the wooden floor, accompanied by the dripping they had heard before.
—Oh, my children... I’ve found you...
Katia, her eyes filled with tears of terror, looked at the computer screen.
The audio files they had been analyzing began reorganizing themselves into a new folder. Two names appeared on it, along with the exact coordinates of the house and, beneath them, a date highlighted in black.
Katia went pale.
It was the date of both investigators’ deaths, ten years earlier.
“Jonathan…” she whispered.
He did not answer. He remained frozen in front of the closed door, but now he was staring at his own reflection in the windowpane. He noticed that his clothes were no longer the ones he had been wearing that night. He was wearing a soaked sweater covered in mud. There were two large cuts on his face, one on his forehead and another on his cheek.
Jonathan slowly raised his hands and saw that they were wet. Dark droplets fell from his fingers and pooled on the floor. When he brought them closer to his face, he noticed an unbearable smell of mud and stagnant water.
Then he understood why they could not get out and why the recorder had spoken their names.
They were not investigators searching for the truth behind a legend in an abandoned house…
They were two spirits trapped in the eternal loop of tragedy, reliving over and over again the night when the water took everything away, condemned to search for each other through the EVPs of the living in order to remember who they used to be.
—Jonathan… —susurró.
Él no respondió.
