Small Things That Sustain Me #36

What I Found While Tidying Up

There are moments when a small part of the house begins to bother us more than it should. Not because it is truly messy, but because we know we have been putting things there for far too long without really thinking about them. That happened to me a few days ago with a drawer that had gradually become one of those places where everything finds a temporary home: papers, things that might be useful someday, little objects I didn't know where else to put, and other things I probably didn't even remember having.

I decided to empty it and start again. It wasn't a big task, and I had no intention of turning it into an entire day of cleaning. I simply wanted to know what was actually in there and create a little more space. I took everything out one piece at a time, separating what I still needed from the things that had been taking up space for far too long without any real reason. As I did it, I realized something that happens quite often: sometimes we keep things not because they are important, but because we never find the right moment to decide what to do with them.

And then I found a small memory I had completely forgotten about.

I held it in my hand for a few seconds before remembering where it had come from and why it had ended up in that particular drawer. It wasn't valuable, nor was it especially beautiful. To someone else, it probably wouldn't have meant anything at all. But for me, it was connected to a specific moment, a person, and a period of my life that had already become quite distant.

I stood there looking at it and, of course, stopped tidying for a while.

That is the strange thing about memories. We can think we have forgotten something, and then suddenly an object appears and brings back details we thought were gone. It isn't only the image of the moment that returns, but also a feeling, a conversation, a place, or even the way we felt back then. It is like opening a small door that had been closed for a very long time.

After that, I continued with the drawer, but I didn't do it quite the same way. Some things went into the trash, others found a more appropriate place, and the little memory decided to stay. Not because it was suddenly more valuable than before, but because I understood why it had remained there for so long.

When I finished, the drawer was much simpler. There were fewer things, and it was easier to find whatever I needed. And although the change was small, I felt something similar in my mind. I don't believe that organizing a drawer can solve our worries or that a perfectly organized home guarantees peace of mind. But I do think that, at certain moments, putting a little order around us can help us feel that at least one small thing is under our control.

Perhaps that is why I sometimes feel like tidying up when I have too much on my mind. Not because I believe everything can be solved by putting every object in its proper place, but because starting with something small is easier than trying to organize everything we are carrying inside. A drawer can be dealt with. We can empty it, look at what it contains, and decide what we want to keep. Our worries are rarely that simple.

And there is something I like even more about what happened. If I hadn't decided to tidy that day, that memory would probably have remained there for a very long time. I wasn't looking for it. I didn't know I needed to find it. It simply appeared while I was doing something completely ordinary.

Maybe some of the little moments that sustain us work exactly like that. We don't always go looking for them. Sometimes they appear while we are doing something else and make us stop for a few minutes.

The drawer was organized, but I took something else away with me besides a clearer space. I took a memory I didn't know I still needed.

And perhaps that is another one of those small things I appreciate about everyday life: sometimes, while we are trying to make a little space outside, we end up finding something we had stored deep inside.

Thank you for joining me for another one of those small moments that, without making much noise, manage to sustain me.

This is Vera, learning that sometimes tidying a small space can also make room for a memory.
