And yet for every evil there is a worse one.

—Thomas Hardy

CUARTA PARTE

PART FOUR

I never thought that I would have to live through such an event, full of horror, atrocity, nightmare, and oppression. For a fifteen year old boy these things should not happen to him; and today the trauma has left its mark on all states of my consciousness. I lost my brother first, then my family, and finally my friend the ranger. Everyone had fallen into a kind of hysteria, which made me think: why didn't that affect me? Was I the only one immune from the whole group?

The text messages from the doctor, who had taken the sample of the biological abnormality Joshua had in his chest, explained what it was, its natural composition, and the functions of its rooting. At first I didn't understand anything, the nerves, fear and anxiety didn't let me understand, but gradually I began to understand some paragraphs, especially those that exposed an emergent character.

It had everything to do with the strange anomaly that my brother had installed in his torso, which produced that dust that he issued from his mouth. According to the doctor, that chemical composition was in the form of spores, which contained substances that were harmful to the central nervous system. These spores were produced by a fungus that was installed in Joshua's thorax, and thanks to them, the fungus had influence on the living beings around him; it was like a defense mechanism to continue subsisting.

Apparently I was the only one with immunity to the spores, so I was the only one who could stop him. The doctor's messages continued to explain the terrible nature that I was facing. The spore substances had a high tetanus content, mixed with another unknown chemical composition. It was impossible for the reagents to lay out a detailed order to reach a conclusion, yet at the end he said something that stopped my heart for several minutes.

The chemicals in the spores not only caused an accelerated neurosis, which the individual did not have time to assimilate, but also culminated in a terrifying effect: Death! My family was posthumously dying and I didn't know what to do! The doctor recommended that we run away, since a team from the hospital was already on its way with instruments and materials to eradicate the calamity, but it was too late for my family.

I was faced with two disastrous decisions, neither of which I liked at all. I thought at that moment that I would solve everything and at least save the rest of my family, but it was not so. Everyone was already infected and nothing could be done, everything would go on forever, the only thing left was to run away. But at that moment I didn't think about it, I still had the deep hope that I could still save at least the rest of my family and my friend the ranger.

I made the decision to kill Joshua, my brother, that's right! I went into the kitchen and got the biggest knife I could find. I walked slowly and stealthily to his room, while everyone else was ranting and raving, trapped in that limbo of hysteria. Every time I remember their lost looks, I cry and whip myself for not having done more. I took courage as I entered the room, and when I saw my brother again my eyes were filled with astonishment at the sight of his new state.

The fungus... It was sticking out of his chest! It was quite large with a long, ovoid trunk above his head, like a phallus. It was about 35 cm long, I was not quite sure as my eyes were overflowing with tears. I knew I had to get it out at the root even if it caused my brother's death, but I thought I could save my family. I approached cautiously, contemplating more closely that horror, and in an adrenaline rush I raised the knife to descend my hands with all my strength.

When I was about to plunge it into the mushroom, my brother's hand suddenly stopped me by squeezing the wrist of one of my hands. I was startled by the terror and wanted to step back but he wouldn't let me, until I finally broke free and stood against the wall as I watched in shock as he stood up. He seemed to be in a zombie state, and his eyes were not even open anymore, at that moment I understood that it was the fungus that was controlling him. At one point he was inert for a minute, and that's when I became more courageous and rushed to his chest.

Vinieron a interrogarme. Me hicieron muchos estudios.

FIN

Finally I got that punch, and over and over again I inserted the knife as if I was stabbing myself. Oh God, how terrible, how disgusting! I really don't know how I can go on living today! After finishing and leaving the bloody surroundings, I fled from the hut and went to the nearest road. I felt dead inside, as if I no longer felt anything and the overwhelming heat did not allow me to expel much breath.

After that I did not know what happened. I became unconscious. I woke up in a hospital bed with low vital signs. I found out later what had happened to my family. The team of specialists had arrived on the scene and incinerated the area along with the bodies. They came to question me. They did a lot of tests on me. I went through several psychologists and psychiatrists. I lived for a long time in health centres until I was taken to a specialist clinic which is treating me today. Even the aftermath of that trauma tortures me and every day I relive that memory, with fear and repulsion for nature.
