—Nathaniel Hawthorne

What dungeon is darker than one's own heart? What jailer is more inexorable than oneself?

—Nathaniel Hawthorne

SEGUNDA PARTE

SECOND PART

It's been six years since the horrible calamity that befell my family. It all happened during that vacation in the forest house, when my older brother - Joshua - was attacked by that strange anomaly that settled in his body. My parents were the first to fall into this vertigo of madness, later my sister - Daniela - and I. Waiting for medical results which would be the answer to that situation, we were overwhelmed by something emerging from the bowels of nature.

That morning when I woke up, I noticed that my brother was spewing a kind of dust from his mouth, which expanded like a cloud of spores covering the whole room. He was lying on his back in his bed and I was just watching him with my eyes almost out of joint. I was in the most unusual situation that my poor young mind could not understand, but of course, that chimerical moment was not going to end there.

As I stood beside him watching the cloud of yellow spores spreading through the air, suddenly a loud knock hit the door of the room and I backed out with a start. I stared at the door and slowly moved closer, extending my hand to the handle, when suddenly another knock of the same magnitude came back against the door. I took three steps back, felt a sensation of unparalleled fear, as if I were in some unknown upward danger.

As I stood at a considerable distance, I stared at the doorknob which began to move regularly and quickly, and as the doorway opened completely, I saw that it was Daniela who came in with dark circles under her eyes and tears rolling down her cheeks. I stared at her, stunned by the concern, asking her what was wrong with her. To which she replied that she suddenly felt a deep sadness, because she had violent thoughts about her parents being mutilated.

When she told me something so atrocious, I was speechless and took her hand to lie down next to me. I stroked her hair and placed her head on my chest to comfort her. She told me that she was afraid, that she didn't know why she was having such cruel thoughts. I told her that she would forget it, that she was now at peace with us, her brothers; and at that moment, I remembered the strange singularity that concerned Joshua and showed her the spores that came out of his mouth.

She asked me in shock what they were and I evidently confessed to her that I did not know. We walked around the house and saw that the spores were everywhere: in the kitchen, the living room, the stairs; it was like being in the atmosphere of a wildflower nursery. As we stood in the hallway near our parents' room, we saw that the door was ajar. As we looked inside, we found my mother lying on the floor in the fetal position, and I rushed over to her. She grabbed my right wrist tightly, I felt as if my hand joints were going to break, I looked down and saw her face in the middle of the darkness, covered by a mask of anger and melancholy.

An intense terror drove my body's engines with adrenaline. I tried to escape but it was no use. More and more, she clung to me. She asked me several times about my brother and where he was, to which I replied that he was still in the room. She spoke to me in a guttural voice, with intense fury! I asked my sister for help but she did not come to my aid! When I turned around, I found her on the floor, drowned in a deep cry. I looked around to see if I could find my father, but... he was nowhere to be found! I feared the worst and as I could, I managed to free myself from my mother's clutches and fled to the kitchen.

I didn't know what to do at that moment, I also had no idea where my father was. I took a few steps backwards, staring into the hallway, aware of another impending danger. For now, I looked out the kitchen window and it was there that I found my father sitting in the front lawn chair. I looked out and shouted at him but he didn't answer me, instead he squeezed his head tightly and grunted as if in severe pain.

I didn't know what was happening! My family had gone completely crazy! Even my sister was not in her right mind to help me deal with this situation. I heard my mother's screams from the kitchen until, in an instant of rebellion, a loud cry began to be heard. I didn't want to find out what was going on, so I went back to the room with my brother, who was still sleeping peacefully.

Continuara...

An impulsive terror completely overpowered me, I wanted to escape from that house into the woods. I felt a sudden insecurity against my family so I opened the window and escaped into the woods. I didn't know where I was going but I went to get help. I didn't look back, I knew my family was in danger and I had to find out what was causing it. I arrived at the cabin of a ranger, who had become a good friend of mine the last time I was there. I knocked on the door in desperation, crying, screaming for help until he appeared and with his eyes wide open he said, —What's going on, boy? —.
