FIN
Even if we travel the world to find beauty, we must carry it with us to find it.
— Emerson
My mother wouldn't let me near the little nursery at home, because I liked to play with the belladonna berries and make the mandrake roots cry. My very talkative aunt would accuse my mother of the things I did and she would scold me.
-Catrina, leave the ingredients alone! - She would yell at me, and I would run out the door.
My cousin Camila and I were barely ten years old. We still couldn't use magic like our mothers, but sometimes we would make a circle between us and use pyrokinesis to make the fire dance.
Once, one of the Mothers caught us, and with just a wave of her right hand, she put out the fire. We both sat like statues on the floor.
-Girls, how many times have we told you not to use magic! -he demanded, and we ran off to the side of the forest.
We got into trouble several times, she was my partner in mischief until we turned seventeen; which is the age when a witch begins to use magic freely within a coven.
Camila, with her hair as dark as the fur of the cats we raised. Mine, on the other hand, was as red as the fire we evoked. Her eyes were black, dilated like those of gazelles. Mine were green like the leaves of the forest. His skin had a faint color in the face of pallor. Mine was as white as milk and sprinkled with freckles; they ran from my nose to my hands.
They said we were twins, but with different features. We were the same height and had similar facial expressions. We always walked together and thought we would never be separated, until the big challenge came; the day we had to master the wonders.
This was very important for a witch, as she could finish her apprenticeship and become an official member of the coven. We mastered air, water, fire, and earth, and traveled to other uncertain worlds that our minds could never imagine.
We passed the greatest challenge and all our sisters celebrated with us. They danced around us and dressed us in myrtle and white roses, while we drank thick, sweet concoctions of rich forest berries. Camila went another way with my aunt, while I went with my mother, to continue my mission as a witch.
One night, Camila came to me. She was crying, her hair matted and her face a bit dirty. With a piece of sheet, I wiped her cheeks and asked her what had happened. She confessed to me that she had cast a spell on a peasant with whom she fell in love. The spell caused him to leave his wife and children and look for Camila in the forest to make love to her. She, with herbal creams smeared on her naked body, made the man sniff her like a predator.
Now Camila was remorseful and felt that her dupe would pursue her to exhaustion. That night he almost strangled her, and when she told me that, I was angry and scared at the same time. We called for help from the coven and they all came without complaint. We activated the sacred fire in the middle of the forest. We summoned the swift spirits that rushed towards our circle from one side to the other.
We brought the bewitched man before the fire and it spread, raising sparks. The flesh was burned from the feet, beginning to give off a nauseating smell of incineration. As the sisters danced, I hugged Camila. A tear slid down her right cheek and I immediately wiped it away. She kept looking at the fire until it was finally consumed.
The next day, before the sun appeared, a new man emerged from the ashes. He walked through one of the gorges of the forest, disoriented and with slow steps; we let him go, for we knew he was heading for home. Camila was punished for her recklessness and her magical powers were blocked. I gave her a comforting hug and told her it was not the end of the world. She smiled at me and we walked together again on those trails; just like when we were a couple of little girls.
