What we think of death only matters because of what death makes us think of life.
FIN
There were times when worry was breathing down my neck. Stress would overwhelm me, causing me great pain in my back. I was enraptured in extensive reading, concentrating on preparing my classes for the university; the day was approaching when I had to present my position in order to get the position and become a permanent professor of philosophy. This was the source of my stress and fatigue, and a major problem: I suffered from narcolepsy, which was increased by this strong preoccupation.
I tried to give myself space to do other activities, but I only had sporadic solutions because I had to return to my studies. My disorder interrupted my concentration, so I had to give in to it and fall into rest. One afternoon, wrapped by my narcolepsy, I was taken by a relaxing nap that lifted me up in dreams. I began to visualize strange territories; very vast like unknown plains. At each end, there were armies with particular flags, it was obvious that a pitched battle was going to be fought.
After a few minutes the sky took on a gray hue, and a war cry went up from both sides. They charged in ranks against each other, destroying each other until they became nothing more than piles of bleeding corpses. It all ended in a dismal silence that was broken by cawing crows, who enjoyed the feast before them.
Then, the atmosphere felt heavier. The place was already murky with so much death everywhere, however, something much worse was looming; something perverse and with entelechy, which brought blue and frightening darkness supported by a gloomy aura. In the midst of that gloomy background, the image of a sorcerer appeared; at first I could not make him out, but gradually my eyes witnessed his frightful appearance, and I felt so afraid that I wished that nightmare would end.
I looked into his empty eyes like wells of doom, his stark, pale face exposed to the dim light that enveloped us. His black trench coat stretched like mist as he raised his arms. A manipulable, emerald-colored energy began to emerge from the corpses and drifted like threads of mist toward the sorcerer's hands. His eyes lit up; they were no longer empty, but instead were hosted by two fatuous flames. At that precise instant, he stared at me, I knew he was there. I could not move my feet, no matter how much I wanted to, I could do nothing. I was trapped under the evil influence of paralysis. I wanted to wake up, with all the desperation of my soul I wished for it, but everything was useless. I remained silent until all that evil slowly covered me like a shadow, and when the demon was almost in front of me I woke up. I looked around in fear and locked the doors and windows.
Through an opening, I looked outside, it was still daytime, but the sky was cloudy as in my dream. Images came to my mind about the appearance of the protagonist of my nightmare, remembering that I had already read something about it. I rummaged through my library, looking like a madman, shuffling books sideways. I found an unopened box, where I kept those fiction stories I used to read when I was young. I found the novel "The Shadow Stalker", written by Nicholas Weltz; an epic fantasy author I loved to read a lot.
In this novel, in particular, there was a creature described by him as a "Lich"; this is a wizard who decided to abandon life to become a servant of death, with the sole purpose of being immortal. The Lichs are like walking corpses, but with entelechy, capable of manipulating all death around them through their supernatural powers. They control flocks of the undead to achieve their purposes here on Earth, and those who defy their desires are pierced by the horror of their cruelty.
I don't know why all this suddenly came into my head, but I was shaken by the nightmare I recently had. My legs shook and my thoughts only revolved around it. I inhaled and exhaled slowly until I was able to calm down a bit, I took those books and put them away again, I didn't want to think about it again, because, I still had an important goal to accomplish, and I couldn't let something out of nowhere damage my concentration.
That night, I sank deeper into the books and completely forgot about it, but a bad smell began to invade my nose and that's when my vision blurred. The room I was in was dark; not even the light coming through the window could illuminate even a tiny space. A blue-green smoke was coming in through the openings in the frame, rising to form something disturbing and frightening. The figure of that wizard of death manifested itself, infesting me once again with horrors. The subtlety of its call slowly dragged me, emitting strange words. Again I fell paralyzed, I could not run away this time, this time we were face to face. I looked at him without saying a word, trying to leave him the unknown of why he was chasing me.
A short caress of his fleshy fingers made me react again, waking up on my study desk. It was another nightmare; more intense than the last. This second time I was more afraid so I ran out of my head to seek professional help. Several days passed and I had to stay at my parents' house, I hadn't seen them for a long time and my new appearance worried them, because every time I saw the shadows, I saw that horrible face of death watching me for some particular reason.
