In Part one of this piece we went into the general history of the Avocado and how to plant and grow them. today we will talk about how to grow avocados from a seed.
Not all avocado seed will grow, not all of your trees that will grow from the seeds will bear fruit. This is something you must know. So be prepared to pamper your plant baby with the possibility of never getting any love in return meaning fruit goodness. It's a labour of love.
Avocado seeds are surprisingly easy to sprout. Suspending avocado seeds over water with toothpicks is one of the most popular methods of making them sprout but there are a ton of other ways to achieve this. You can use a ring to suspend the pit, you can forgo the Jar and grown them in a baggy or actually grow then directly in damp soil.
It takes about 3-6 weeks for seeds to sprout and about 3 month to grow about 15 cm (six inches ).
1- an avocado pit/seed
2- a few toothpicks,
3- a glass, cup, small bowl or jar
4- water
1-Carefully open your avocado by cutting it in half.
2- pull out the seed & rinse it gently with clear warm water.
3- set the seed with it's flatter side on your work space
4- insert 3-4 toothpicks half way up the seed in equal distance
5- fill your cup, glass, bowl jar with fresh clear water
6- suspend the seed by the toothpicks on the rim of your cup, bowl, glass, jar so that the bottom of the seed (the flat part) is wet.
7-Set the cup, bowl, glass, jar with seed in a sunny window and wait for it to sprout.
8- After the roots are established about 10cm ( 4 inches) you can transfer your plant to soil.
The baggie method is a universal seed stater not only applicable to avocados. It also makes it easy to check on spouting progress without disturbing the fledgling plants too much.
1- a baggie (ziplock or any other see through plastic)
2- an avocado pit/seed
3- paper towel or cloth dish towel
4- water
1-Carefully open your avocado by cutting it in half
2- pull out the seed and rinse it gently with clear warm water
3- Wrap the seed in a damp (not dripping wet) paper towel or other cloth.
4- gently place the seed and towel into the baggy do not close it
5- put the baggy in a warm dark place (around 21掳C/70掳F ) and check on it periodically. Change towel when needed
6- after a few weeks your seed should sprout- when the root is about 7-8 cm (3 inches ) it is ready to be planted
1- an avocado pit/seed
2- a pot
3- well-draining potting soil
4-water
1- Carefully open your avocado by cutting it in half
2- pull out the seed and rinse it gently with clear warm water
3- plant seed as soon as you can after opening the avocado as it needs to stay moist
4- choose a well-draining container with drainage holes at the bottom
5- fill it with lose fast draining soil (potting soil or a mixture of soil and sand )
6- plant seed with the flat part down and the more rounded or pointy side up as the roots always come from the flat side.
7- cover with soil
8- water your soil always keep damp but never soggy or the seed will rot
9- place your pot in a warm sunny place
10- wait for your plant to sprout (this can take a few weeks and in some cases months )
while earth planting is more natural and whimsical I personally prefer water/baggy method. Why ? Because one is able to see to see the roots as they grow. This is a benefit because one can determine which seeds are good and which seeds aren鈥檛 growing at all. I personally get stupidly sad when mine do not grow, so this keeps me from sappy planting heartache and obsessing too much. The toothpick method however, wile the most common, does have a downside though. It can cause damage to the seed, making it less likely to sprout and make the seed susceptible to rot.
