I have a sense that people feel more isolated then ever in our current age. while I don't have stats to back up this claim, it seems we are more connected on the internet, but struggle to attain real physical connections.
I am in a unique entrepreneurial situation: I do lots of online business, and work from my room for nearly 10 hours a day. To many people this seems like the life( and it is to some degree), but one major draw back is the personal interactions I miss. However, it's not just me, many others struggle to interact with people outside of their technology bubble.
Most people around me are consumed by the noises coming from their phones, or our heads are stuck on Twitter timelines between sets at the gym. As soon as we get close to people we don't know, or get bored, our reaction is to jump on Instagram. This means we squeeze out opportunities to meet and connect with other people.
It may seem obvious that we should go out to meet people when it's not happening organically, but for me, it wasn't that obvious. After nearly two years of struggling to find a way to meet people outside of my technology bubble, I found a way.
Last year I started taking Chinese classes at a Chinese Community Center, then I began going salsa dancing once a week through a business/ meetup group online. Since engaging in my interests and passions with like minded people I have felt much more connected, and met a few good people along the way. On the internet there are meet up groups, classes, and businesses that target nearly every type of passion. Look for Facebook groups and Meetup.com groups, you will find a community of people doing something you enjoy. So if you feel consumed and isolated by the technology in your life, use it to find a group of people like you.
