Çonfronting Fear- Living Abundantly
Fear is a drug. I have some ingrained fears that I have been working on, and some that have emerged over the years. In order to conquer fear, you need to learn about the reality of the risk, experience the situation that promote your fear and focus on living and not the fear itself.
Fear is something that limits life experience. Everything has a risk of loss, and if you want to be a participant in life, you need to overcome fear of some sort. Without overcoming our fears, as cliche as it sounds, we are a slave to them. In order to live abundantly, we need to overcome fears and take a forward-leaning approach to do si.
I am someone with alot of ingrained fears. Not quite phobias, but fears nonetheless. In life, I have had to confront many fears, and the older I get, the more systematically I do so. First, I asses the fear and determine a "worst case-scenario" for the outcome of the fear in my life. The next step is to see how I can lessen the impact of the hazard that makes me fear it. The next step is to confront the fear through either an interaction or thought exercise, and if I still fear the issue, I consult a professional.
Confronting your fears is hard. Damn hard. It's key to admit you fear something and not deny that it bothers you. Don't deny it and don't try to hide it. I used to hide my fears because I feared being made fun of or having my fear used against me in a prank. I was always afraid if being vulnerable in front of the wrong person about my fear and being put into an awkward situation or a dangerous one. Most of the time, the opposite is true and people can help me overcome the fear.
I learned that you cannot "half-confront" your fears. Dipping your toes into confronting a situation you find nerve racking doesn't work fully. I tried to rely upon crutches to avoid fully confronting my fear of heights and flying, and I was not successful in actually addressing my issues. I needed to confess my fear and take calculated risks to address what was holding me back. The end result was growth and personal boundary reassessment. I was finally able to make progress after all those steps. What happened was personal growth congruent with my newly adjusted boundaries.

Çonfronting fear is part of life. From making friends, taking the first step to a healthy lifestyle, confronting a fear or phobia or approaching a better lifestyle, it is essential for growth. Stagnation is the price we pay for never confronting fears, and if you do so, you will not regret it. We regret the shots we don't take much more than those we miss.
