We experience a wide range of emotions in our lives, and fear is one of them. It is an emotion that no one has been able to escape; from childhood to the present day, there are countless things that frighten us. During our school days, for instance, we see children afraid of various things鈥攕uch as the fear of not getting good grades or anxiety about the future鈥攁nd such fears trouble us from a very young age.

Fear often prevents people from taking certain actions; it can weaken them to such an extent that their ability to think clearly diminishes, leaving them unable to look beyond their fear or focus on anything else. You may have noticed that if a child is frightened of something, they often remain afraid of it; while the fear may fade with age, for some people, it persists throughout their lives, causing them to remain terrified of that specific thing even in adulthood. For instance, if a young child is told not to enter a certain room because there is a ghost inside, they might avoid it out of fear of encountering the spirit. However, for some, this trauma lingers; even after growing up, they hesitate to enter that room, held back by a lingering, inexplicable fear.

Generally speaking, fear is not considered a good thing because it weakens a person and makes them feel helpless; however, there are instances where fear actually provides strength. It is not always the case that fear makes you weak; often, it empowers you. When fear acts as a source of strength, a person becomes so resilient that they gain the ability to confront any kind of fear, eventually even finding satisfaction in facing it. I experienced a similar situation when I first started college. I was living far away from home and had to handle all my chores鈥攃ooking, laundry, and cleaning鈥攐n my own, all while trying to focus on my studies. This resulted in a very hectic schedule. Because of this busy routine, I struggled to find enough time to concentrate on my academics, and I began to fear failing or getting poor grades. I noticed that other students, who lived at home, didn't have to manage household chores and could devote their full attention to their studies; for me, however, balancing daily tasks with academic work was quite challenging. Initially, I spent a lot of time overthinking the situation and became stressed, which took a toll on my health and caused various problems. Eventually, I realized that dwelling on fear was pointless and that I needed to manage my time effectively instead.

To manage my time better, I started waking up early and dedicating whatever spare time I had to my studies. I also set a specific time for cooking鈥攄eciding I would only start after a certain hour鈥攁nd chose quick-to-prepare meals like dal-chawal (lentils and rice). Since these dishes didn't take long to cook, I started with them. I also realized my commute to college took about 20 minutes, so I began utilizing that time; I would carry notes on a single sheet of paper and review them on the way, which saved me the time I would have otherwise spent revising at home. I made changes to my routine in the classroom as well, using any available time to clear up doubts or study and revise鈥攑rovided I wasn't disturbed. After returning from college, I would rest briefly before starting dinner preparations鈥攕uch as kneading dough or chopping vegetables鈥攖o reduce fatigue later on; getting these basic tasks out of the way early helped, as doing everything at once while cooking is exhausting and labor-intensive. By managing my time this way, I overcame the fear I had; once a routine becomes a habit, everything naturally falls into a smooth flow.
In life, we have to do things ourselves and confront our fears based on our circumstances. Friends, fear itself is not bad; what is wrong is letting fear defeat you. You must face your fear to truly overcome it.
