In 1906, Enzo and Cesare drove to meet Leo at a quiet tannery for Chapter 6, La Difesa Siciliana. There, Don Torrisi and Don Galante revealed a secret operation to print counterfeit American currency and tasked Leo, Cesare, and Enzo with freeing a master engraver held in San Celeste.
It was 1906, marking the start of the sixth chapter named La Difesa Siciliana. This time, Enzo was driving while Cesare sat in the passenger seat, both dressed in proper suits.
We were driving through a forest toward a quiet village to meet Leo at the tannery.
I drove the rest of the way, and we found Leo waiting for us. Leo joked that we were late as always, though he guessed it wasn't Enzo's fault.
Following Leo toward a building, he told us he had some idea of what was going on but urged us to wait and see for ourselves. As we opened the door and stepped inside, a cutscene began.
Luca was there along with several others. When Enzo asked what they were doing, Luca showed Don Torrisi and the older Don with him, Don Galante.
Don Galante began explaining that ever since Spadaro took over the mine, he had been busy taking over Gaudi, leaning on unions, buying votes, and nibbling away like a rat. He stated that this could not go unanswered, but warned that tensions were building and a war must be avoided at all costs.
That brought them to a plan for their families' future, which had taken a lot of preparation and good fortune to bring to fruition. Every week, ships arrived from and returned to America, providing a direct line to Empire Bay that they had yet to exploit.
If they use it, they could match Spadaro lira for lira. Don Torrisi added, "Or bullet for bullet."
Luca pointed out that they already exported wine to the mainland and asked why not America. Galante agreed it was a good question, noting that their friends in the New World had particular tastes. He asked Luca and the boys to follow him deeper into the warehouse.
Moving further inside, even Luca was surprised by the heavy machinery he saw and asked what it was. Don Galante explained it was a government currency press, officially destroyed during unrest in the East African colony, but this one had survived.
Enzo realized they intended to print cash for the Americans. Don Torrisi stated that when opportunities arise, they seize them.
Galante noted that there were too many eyes and police in America, meaning an operation like that would be shut down before it started; however, their dollars would come from the outside through controlled shipments.
In return, the American market would open up to them. Luca suggested trading through a local outfit, wondering if the quality would be good enough.
Galante reassured him that they had enlisted the finest counterfeiter in all of Italy to engrave their printing plates. Don Torrisi added that he was a Sicilian who had traveled everywhere, and his work had never been detected.
Galante explained that the man's ship had arrived from Napoli, but he got into an altercation in Porto Almaro. A contact in the San Celeste town hall reported that the man was being held by the Gardi, and they needed to free him before those idiots figured out who they really had.
Consequently, Don Torrisi instructed Leo to take both Cesare and Enzo with him to get the job done, since Leo knew the particulars.
To be continued.
