Something happened some months ago. I can remember that day like it was yesterday...I had a terrifying encounter with a king cobra (snake).
It was a very hot night and I had difficulty getting to sleep, because of the heat in the room at that time. I turned severally in bed trying to force myself to sleep but the sleep just didn't come
I decided to lay on my back with my face pointing towards the ceiling. I Tried counting the ceiling severally, with the hope that I would get tired and then fall asleep but it didn't work. Shortly after that, I remembered I had this particular cool relaxing music which always made me sleep...I decided to play it, and shortly after that, my eyes became really heavy with sleep.
It must have been about 3:30 am , when I began to hear some strange sound right in my room. There have always been sounds of those annoying mosquitoes, crickets, and even wall geckos but this one was quite different. It did not sound familiar at first but when I decided to listen closely, then I noticed it sounded more like a hiss but it still wasn't loud at that moment, the word " snake" was the least word that came to my mind at that time, So I got up lazily to investigate.
I switched on the room light and squinted my eyes to adjust to the sudden brightness. While I was searching for what was making that disturbing sound, the corner of my eye went straight to a black slim figure, just next to my foot. I looked down quickly with a little bit of fear in me,behold it was a big black cobra.
I was so scared that I could not move. I tried screaming for help too but it was as if I was out of words as a result of the shock. Never in my life had I been that scared. I was really confused if I should remain in that same position or just run as fast as I could to at least call for help.
The snake didn't even seem as bothered as I was because it didn't make any sudden movement or try to attack for some time. Perhaps it was blinded by the light too. Well whatever it was that made it so calm, we literally just stared at each other for at least seven seconds.
Shortly After that, it began to move quickly towards my wardrobe. I'm sure it was looking for a perfect place to hide. I quickly took the opportunity to run out of the room. I rushed to alert my dad whose room was directly opposite mine (my mom and siblings had traveled two days earlier). When I told him about the snake in my room, he immediately got up from his bed, and went outside the building shortly after that. He returned with a very thick wood and a very well sharpened cutlass. He handed the stick to me, while he held firmly unto the cutlass lol I could also sense the little amount of fear in him although I loved how he was able to comport himself even in that scary situation so as not to make me more frightened.
Next, we carefully entered my room trying as hard as we could to observe every single thing we saw in the room so as not to step on the snake because at that time, we didn't know where it was hiding.
We made a thorough search for at least 25 minutes but the snake was nowhere in sight. My father said it must be hiding somewhere really dark and told me to be careful. He Picked up the torchlight I left very close to my bed while trying as much as possible to keep everywhere quiet. He bent to look under my bed and saw the snake all curled up there. He immediately told me to get ready with the long piece of wood he gave me earlier. I was not sure how he was going to kill the snake but I obeyed his instructions.
With the cutlass, he tried to make the snake uncomfortable so it could come out. When the snake crawled out from under my bed my father told me to hit it as hard as I could . My goodness, I was really scared to do that but I did it! with a pounding heart and shaking hands, I managed to do as my dad told me to. I noticed that it made the snake move very reluctantly and hence gave my dad enough time to kill it properly with the cutlass . You could see the relief on our faces right after the snake was killed.
Shortly after,
We dug up a hole very close to our compound and buried it.
I just could not sleep for the rest of that night 馃槄馃槄. The experience was just too shocking.
