Residences
There are six different residence types in Three Legacy, and they all do the same thing. . .
Residences provide worker slots. Worker slots are where aliens 'live' while they are reading blueprints, constructing buildings, or completing quests. Having multiple residence types makes it easier to scale your worker slots with your household. Autonomy keeps your household actively queuing for worker slots to become available.

The remaining residences all depend on blueprints linked to the particular circumstances of an alien's birth. Some of them look directly at the parents, and some look at the ancestry. The blueprints that look at parentage are mutually exclusive, and the blueprints that look at ancestry are mutually exclusive, but it is possible for an alien to earn one of each.
With these mutually exclusive birth circumstance groupings, other residences will always lag behind the planning office (and will probably lag behind the Nursery as well), although a new player with a lucky birth timing could qualify for 2 or 3 different residences while they still have only one alien.
Having more worker slots than aliens is not currently of any benefit. When we release guilds, players with idle worker slots can benefit from sharing them with fellow guildmates.
Library
The library requires the "Child of the Committed Sage" blueprint. This blueprint depends on the mother and sage being the same, but the dowager being different. To some extent, this makes it a consolation prize for chart-topping households that lose the race for "Child of Parthenogenesis". When the dowager is picked, they move off the top of that leaderboard. When the sage is picked, they stay at the top of their leaderboard until their fertility is exhausted.
It can also be targeted with less planning required. You can see the upcoming sages on the leaderboard. Some will rotate out by exhausting their fertility as mothers or dowagers before reaching the top, but most that reach close to the top will stay in their spots until reaching the top.
If the same player takes several spots in a row, they can anticipate and plan for a birth pack when they are riding the top. That can help to capture a whole set of these blueprints, with potentially a few "Child of Parthenogenesis" mixed in.
