There are six different residence types in Three Legacy, and they all do the same thing... Residences provide worker slots. Worker slots are where aliens 'live' while they are reading blueprints, constructing buildings, or completing quests. Having multiple residence types makes it easier to scale your worker slots with your household. Autonomy keeps your household actively queuing for worker slots to become available.
The nursery is linked to the 'Matriarch' and 'Grand Matriarch' blueprint tree. This is unique from the rest of the residences, which are all linked to birth circumstances.
The 'Matriarch' blueprint requires filling out all three birth slots. Even a completely inactive player will eventually rise to the top of the Sage leaderboard and have their birth slots filled in by other players. Like 'You're A Parent', every alien will eventually earn 'Matriarch'.
Of course, a player can earn this blueprint for the first time very quickly by birthing more aliens in their own household, and then it scales similarly to the planning office. At a slight delay, a player can keep their Nursery at the same level as their Planning Office.
The 'Grand Matriarch' blueprint is where this starts to get interesting. When an alien has claimed the 'Matriarch' blueprint AND all three of its offspring have claimed the 'Matriarch' blueprint, the player unlocks the 'Grand Matriarch' blueprint. This is a repeatable achievement, with each level unlocked by the alien and its offspring all claiming the previous level. You could think of 'Matriarch' as being tier 0 for the 'Grand Matriarch' repeatable achievement.
The Nursery will count all completed 'Matriarch' and 'Grand Matriarch' blueprints toward the level requirements. Since every alien can eventually earn every tier, a player can spend most of the game with their Nursery levels limited by their Planning Office levels, instead of limited by their blueprints. This can make higher tiers of 'Grand Matriarch' unattractive, because the claiming costs scale more quickly than the usefulness of the blueprint.
There will be a whole family of 'Matriarch' achievements. The variants will depend on your 'Matriarch' meeting certain requirements (all sage births, for example) and then the higher tiers will depend on their offspring all claiming 'Grand Matriarch' (offspring do not have to be the same variant for these claims to count). This will make the higher 'Grand Matriarch' tiers more valuable again (especially since claiming could help unblock 3 or 4 different variants).
