There are six different residence types in Three Legacy, and they all do the same thing. . .
Residences provide worker slots. Worker slots are where aliens 'live' while they are reading blueprints, constructing buildings, or completing quests. Having multiple residence types makes it easier to scale your worker slots with your household. Autonomy keeps your household actively queuing for worker slots to become available.
The remaining residences all depend on blueprints linked to the particular circumstances of an alien's birth. Some of them look directly at the parents, and some look at the ancestry. The blueprints that look at parentage are mutually exclusive, and the blueprints that look at ancestry are mutually exclusive, but it is possible for an alien to earn one of each.
With these mutually exclusive birth circumstance groupings, other residences will always lag behind the planning office (and will probably lag behind the Nursery as well), although a new player with a lucky birth timing could qualify for 2 or 3 different residences while they still have only one alien.
Having more worker slots than aliens is not currently of any benefit. When we release guilds, players with idle worker slots can benefit from sharing them with fellow guildmates.
The Cottage depends on a unique birth event called 'Child of Parthenogenesis'. This is a tricky one that requires the mother, the sage, and the dowager to all be the same alien.
The easiest attainment is for a player to initiate a birth in their own household when they top both the dowager and sage leaderboards. A new player could achieve it with the same timing by setting that player as their referral.
An existing player could wait until they cycle off the sage and dowager leaderboards entirely (no fertile aliens in their own household anymore). When a player with no fertility initiates another birth event, they choose either sage or dowager as surrogate mother. The new alien will still be in their own household even if the mother is not.
When the sage and dowager leaders are the same player, a player with no fertility could obtain a Child of Parthenogenesis by initiating a birth event.
This blueprint is also worth 2 points, where most blueprints are only worth 1 point. This creates an intentional race condition, with multiple players trying to initiate a new birth when they see the sage and dowager leaderboards have the same leader.
Partially because of its extra value, and partially because of the slow initial rollout of the game, this blueprint has appeared a lot more often than we expected! We still think that it will become less common over time, but there will always be spots where a new whale dominates the sage leaderboard for a while and Child of Parthenogenesis becomes readily available again whenever they also pop to the top of the dowager leaderboard.
