At times when you first encounter large apex predators in their natural world you are quite excited to say the least. Typically, I get really excited when I find a pod of orca when I am working in the Southern Ocean or around the Antarctic Peninsula. Well, I actually get excited when I find orca no matter where I am I the world.

However, it always begs to discuss who is actually watching who. These animals are incredibly fast, agile and sneaky if they want to be. So when ships get closer to them and the orca decide to start circling the vessel, swimming under it and surface right next to the ship with their entire heads out of the water it really begs the question... Who is watching who?

You can see this large male whom is a small Type B orca in the Bransfield Strait, Antarctica has surfaced to breath but his entire head and eyes are out of the water in order to get a better look at what we are and what we are doing. No doubt these are my favourite moments when I am working so far away from home and well... basically, what we consider to be civilization.
