Welcome to The Ink Well's weekly creative nonfiction prompt!

In this post, we'll provide the prompt for the coming week.

Before You Write Your Creative Nonfiction Post...

We ask that you read our Creative Nonfiction Tips post to learn about the creative nonfiction genre and review our guidelines.

Important notes:

Creative nonfiction stories are based on your real-life experiences.
We are looking for real short stories! Not advice columns, reports on crime or corruption in your city, observations on nature, recipes, religion, politics, or any other nonfiction content. Just real-life short stories.
Ideal story length is between 750 and 1500 words, but your story must be at least 350 words, at a minimum to be curated.
Please focus on quality content. Read and edit for errors! Use a grammar checker before you post your story.
We expect everyone who posts in The Ink Well to read and comment on at least two other stories for each one published.
Do not post stories featuring physical abuse, graphic violence, erotica or NSFW content.

Garden Whispers

I smiled and nodded my head. If my Mama were to be here to see what I have accomplished, that little patch of earth and pots filled with green pumpkin leaves, pepper and every other little thing you could think of, I'm sure she would be proud of me. Who wouldn't be, I sure as hell was proud of myself.

Curator's comment :

zerah writes a lovely, thoughtful and insightful CNF that comes to life through her skilfully use of dialogue. Zerah gives us the lowdown on how her garden gives her peace and comfort. However, there’s more because thanks to her effort her friend manages to find comfort in the garden too. So the garden turns into a double blessing. Nice!

Grandma, tell me a story.

As what entertains me and makes me feel good is to write my stories in the Hive. I immediately wrote a non-fiction one and published it. From that moment on I couldn't write any more because my computer was damaged, it was useless. Then I began to feel bored, a little sad and depressed.

Curator's comment :

rammargarita writes a lovely CNF piece about her recovery and months spent on her porch telling stories to young children. She has the voice of oral tradition in this writing, and this reflects the content of the piece.

At last I found myself

For a long time I let myself go and let others decide what was good or not good for me, for the sake of not doing things wrong. But when my son turned 2 years old I didn't recognize myself anymore, I lost myself. I could not even say what my favorite food was, read a book or a story, which was my passion before, but everyone said that as a mother I should stop wasting my time, so I did not read anymore, I did not leave the house either.

Curator's comment :

nathy33 writes an absolutely wonderful CNF about how she dealt with judgment and opinions by anyone and everyone when she became pregnant and then more so once she had her child. I remember this exact thing happening to me. Everyone feels the need to comment and soliloquize on childcare and rearing. For nathy33, she found herself hiding away, not going out, all in an effort to avoid the watchful eyes. Then finally she realized she had lost herself and wanted her freedom back, a few months after her son turned two.

A knot in front of the sea

Anyway, I don't know if it was because of so much attention or because this guy was really handsome, or because in previous lives we knew each other, I fell in love that week with a complete stranger.

Curator's comment :

nancybriti1 writes a dreamy, lovely, CNF love story about a first love when she was very young. It had me caught up in that amazing feeling of joy and tenderness that seems to be associated with young love, and memories of what those delightful and painful heartsick feelings were like.

This Week's Prompt 116:

Gift of time

Write a personal story about something that happened to you or someone close to you that focuses around a "gift of time." You can write about a conflict situation in which every minute counted or an experience where extra time made all the difference to the outcome or anything else that comes to mind and would make a good story.

Tell us about it! And remember to integrate storytelling elements like characters, scene setting, dialogue and action to bring your story to life!

Write a real-life story with the creative elements of fiction, like characters, dialogue, scene setting and a story conflict.
Post your story in The Ink Well Community.
