Scarlet Ibis Silver Coin from the Tropical Paradise of Belize
Over the years I've been fortunate enough to visit many countries all over the world. One of those countries happens t be Belize, it's gorgeous nation in Central America and one of the few counties there that have English as their official language. Probably the most fun I had there was diving the reefs , truly spectacular!
Ever since I lived in South America and the Caribbean I have bee collecting silver coins from several of the countries. Belize is no exception, and over the years when I've found good deals I've purchased coins form the nation. Today I'm sharing one that features and animal, which are among my favorite coins. I think I picked it up Phoenix at a coin shop some 20 years ago. Although they are securely stored away, I do have some images saved in the old laptop!
About the coin:
From numista.com
This was produced by the Franklin Mint in Wawa, Pennsylvania who were producers of some the best silver coins in the 80's in 90's. However, they no longer work with precious metals. This coin is in excellent shape with no spotting from oxidation, so it may have been in Phoenix for all those years. Frequently coins from Caribbean nations tend to oxidized over the years being stored in higher humidity.

The Scarlet Ibis a stunning red bird found in the tropics along the oceans of South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. On occasion a vagrant even finds it's way to the southern US. The feed in grasslands by probing the soft mud with it's bill to find shrimp, beetles, scarabs, and other insects.
They are easily identified by their bright red feathers with black wingtips. I've seen a few in the wild over the years, they are really pretty. They are protected by law in nearly every nation in which they are found, you can see why they celebrate the birds on their coinage!
Just another interesting fact, the scarlet ibis is very closely related to the white ibis found in the US. There have even been occasions that they have produced hybrid chicks in Louisiana and until this day there can be seen pink ibis flying around from time to time.
That will wrap up my post for this Wednesday, I do hope you enjoyed it. Please feel free to add any comments or questions below. And as always I greatly appreciate you support here on Hive! Have a great day everyone!
