I have to confess, after realizing that Crypto has an IMDB rating of 6, I was kind of happy. But after watching the movie, I was shocked.
I mean, completely blown away.
Immediately I went to Rotten Tomatoes, and it all became clear. You see, the tomatometer was 20% while the fan reviews were bordering the 80%.
As you might expect, this kind of discrepancy between critics and audiences is not something that you see everyday. Although it's not truly abnormal.
So I went back to that IMDB page to see if the comment section really reflect the votes that gave that movie their 6 star rating.
At the first page, these are the ratings the commentators gave (out of 10): 1, 2, 0, 3, 1, 2, 6, 0, 4, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, 1, 2, 4, 2, 1, 1, 0, 2.
The comments were pretty telling as well:
“What the hell!”
“Auto-generated screenplays must be a thing now”
“Misleading Title.
This movie has very little to do with crypto. more of a family drama with very poor execution in all departments.”
“Not sure who this movie is for”
“Bad casting, bad acting, bad editing. omg, the lead is supposed to be a super sleuth but he looks like a boxer!”
And the most generous comment, the only one over 5 (rated 6) is this one:
“Three writers, and you'd think at least one would get it right”.
Personally, I agree with the first comment on IMDB: "What the Hell?" But I want to know your thoughts about it.
